Got a tractor.

I brought home my first larger tractor, that I'm not going to cut up. It's an Allis Chalmers WD45. It needed a radiator and I need to get a new fuel filter and fuel lines today. I had a good radiator until I put a hole in the tank welding the mount back together. After some time with the soldering iron and Mapp torch it's fixed.

I'm kind of a tractor geek and this one was owned by my dad, before him, my uncle, and before both of them, my grandpa. It's the first tractor I drove and has a lot of meaning to me. I have other garden tractors that were in the family for years, but this one was always my favorite.

I believe it's a 1955 model. I have another I bought last year at scrap value. The other has a loader frame and power steering. I'll work on getting pics up. I'm looking to put a three point hookup on it and buy/build stuff for it. I'm very excited about it.

On another note, (not directly related, but in tune with this thread)

I had a brand new used welder show up today. I traded some items of "more than scrap value" for it. Win-win deal. 200 amp Hobart wire feed.

No luck on the pics for me. Photobucket was being weird. But I was able to put down a few practice beads with my new welder. Things really started happening when I found "2nd Gear". It has a high range and a low range for voltage output. The only way I can think to explain it is in terms of cars. It was like a Chevy with a powerglide. 1st will get ya going but 2nd is when you start really having fun.

When I got to her, the fenders were off. The fenders are held on by three bolts. One was broken off and the other two were in by about three threads, on each side. I was abe to pull the broken bolts with the use of heat quite easily.

The internal threads were rusted fairly good. I didn't have the correct tap to chase the threads, so I improvised.

This is a trick I was taught a while ago. I have extra bolts around, so I grabbed my grinder with a cut off wheel in it and put some flutes into one. Then I put some anti-seize on the threads and ran them in the rusty holes. Once on each hole. I was then able to thread the bolts in by hand until the split lock washer stopped them.

I put the old girl to work today. About 5 hours of pulling (just) two railroad track sections, and she didn't skip a beat. I had about three gallons of gas in and added about seven and she was still going when the sky turned dark and the thunder started. I think I could get used to a two gallon an hour, if not better, fuel consumption. Need to figure out a three point. I have a heavy duty backblade and can probably get my mitts on a brushhog. She's a working girl now!

Well I did my first scrap pickup on my tractor. The neighbor mentioned to me awhile ago that he wanted a lawn roller. I happened to find one he could pull with his wheeler or lawn mower. So I hitched it up and drove over to see him. He had two well pumps and maybe twenty lbs of wire. We've gotten lots of this sort of thing from them so I had no problem giving away my lawn roller in trade for scrap.

I come from a long line of farmers and we tend to lean red. Allis are good tractors though. Where I live everyone has has tractors and in the second weekend in August they all bring them together for a fair of sorts. It is called Threshermans, located in Albert City, Iowa. People from all over the midwest come with there tractors and even classic cars. There is a main tractor manufacture selected each year for the main tractor event. Last year it was Allis and this year, coming in a couple weeks, is Minneapolis Molines. People come from coast to coast. Its pretty nice.
