Most of those ^ are from the past couple of years. I dont get out much any more.

fishing and scrapping, luckily they are my occupations so life is good. I fish all week take saturday off then break what the ol'lady finds all week on sunday.

Mostly old parks, old schools, farm fields where a house once stood, relative's old homes.... basically any place that is old & has human activity there a long time. One of my oldest coins (1856 seated liberty dime) came from a park that dated back to at least 1875. It was worn so thin that it must have been lost near the 1920s.Originally Posted by 89yota

I love metal detecting I just have trouble figuring good places to go. My hobbies include: Scraping, surfing, downhill longboarding, gardening, kayaking & fishing, snowboarding, mountain biking, trading stocks, hiking and mushroom hunting, camping, 4 wheeling, and working on cars.

I've gone metal detecting with my brother before, a little slow for me, but exciting when you find something cool! My biggest hobby is strongman(like on ESPN). Lifting random heavy stuff is what I call fun!! hehe. Kinda what got me interested in scrapping in the first place. besides that hunting, fishing, archery, disc golf, and whatever else can challenge me.

What's a good metal detector to get. I used my step dads before but I think his was just a cheap one.

I have the GARRETT INFINIUM LS which is a pulse induction detector, not recommended for places where humans frequent. The PI metal detectors do not discriminate between trash and treasure. On the other hand they do a very good job at finding metal objects that are deep in the ground.
For places were humans go for fun and pleasure I would suggest getting a good VLF detector.
My girlfriend had a cheap White and I had another Garrett and her White would find way more coins than my more expensive detector,If metal detecting turns your crank I suggest that you join a club and just hang around on some of the outings long enough to see which detectors are finding the goodies before laying out that hard earned cash.
Never take a mans word that his metal detector is the best, as far as I'm concerned my Infinum is the best but may not be the machine for you. It really boils down to where you plan to hunt as to which detector is going to be best for you, buy two.

Which metal detector are you using, is your detector just as good at hunting in the parks as on highly mineralized beaches. At what depth was your average find. How many false digs do you do in a day of hunting, in other words is you detector good at discriminating between trash and treasure.
I want to purchase another detector for use in highly populated areas your answers could help me make that decision on which one to purchase.

I use an older white's electronics Spectrum XLT ....which is the same as the newer model just called "XLT", but they stopped selling them a few years ago. Mine doesnt work well on beaches. I tried it out in england years ago & it had problems. The salt water I assume. Average depth?... I dont know how to answer that....Deepest is probably about 9 inches for a coin sized object & THAT is just barely reading it as "something" and not accurately showing what it might be. I'd say its pretty capable at discriminating out trash for the most part, but there are some sought after objects that will always register the same as trash.
Note: you see a lot of trash in some of those pictures because I was looking for gold rings & you gotta dig up pulltabs & misc, trash to find them.

I figure everyone needs to do something they consider fun, just for the love of doing it occassionally. Keeps ya sane!
Besides, once I gut a car, every ounce of non ferrous gets salvaged from it. Win/win.

Nice finds do you hunt the dirt or water myself I hunt the water don't like all the trash in the dirt I hunt with an Excal II 1000 10 inch coil love that machine.
