I served during a quiet time between 1984 and 1990. I didnt enlist until after I graduated from college. Went to Ft. Sill Artillery School MOS 13B. 155mm towed 1/156 Battery A NYARNG. I transferred a year or so later to NJARNG 3/113th Co D Mechanized Infantry. In 1986 I transferred to USNR FFG-7 Oliver Hazard Perry in Philadelphia and finished out my term as a Gunner's Mate GMG3. I am proud to have served and know that I came close to going to the Gulf as both of my Guard units were sent over. The 1/156 was assigned to 10th Mountain in Ft. Drum. I just wasnt in the right place at the right time. My regrets for not serving in combat have been diminished somewhat after visiting our wounded troops at Walter Reed on several occasions. It was always sobering to see these young men and women who were wounded and the suffering they were going through, but they were always in high spirits and many were planning to continue their careers in the military. The army hospital is now closed as I understand it and Bethesda (Navy) has taken over.

I am now a member of Rolling Thunder NJ chapter and work hard to raise awareneness and money for the POW/MIA mission and for our veterans. I am happy to say I am able to be a better veteran than I ever was a soldier. "All gave some, some gave all".

    United States Army Reserve

    '99-'07

    Basic - Fort Benning, GA
AIT - Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD
MOS - 52D (power generation equipment repairer) (now known as 91D)

Primary unit was based out St. Louis, MO, in an NBC company (nuclear, biological, chemical). Spent most drill weekends and AT studying NBC and working with local, state, and Federal law enforcement agencies on how to contain and clean up NBC terrorist incidents, should there be one (luckily there weren't any) - Didn't get to do much with my MOS, as we were always in class or out in the field learning about NBC warfare.

I officially enlisted and swore in during my junior year of High School (as soon as I turned 17..I was pumped!), in what was called the "Split Option" or Split-Op plan. During the time between my junior year and senior year, while my buddies were partying hard, I was completing Basic at none other than Fort Benning, GA. We were reportedly among the first non-infantry groups to go there for Basic, so needless to say, our Drill Sergeants weren't used to that and made sure we got a full dose of 11B training - or at least as much as they were allowed to dish out on us. Quite frankly, I loved it!

After senior year, was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, for AIT - my MOS was 52D, which is a power generation equipment repairer.

Drilled at my unit in St. Louis, MO - ready to rock and roll.

Volunteered for whatever they wanted using Army's volunteer hotline after 9/11. Though I thought I called early, I wasn't early enough, as they were already full! However, they sent me a nice certificate of thanks anyway.

    Honorably discharged.

Hello Fellow Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines:

I am actually one of the rare people who served in two branches of the U.S. military. First, from 1986 (out of high school) through 1990 (my unit went to Saudi) I served in the U.S. Marine Corps, 3Bn/24Mar, St. Louis, MO as a Motor Transport Operater (3521), then broke my back in a motorcycle accident which left doing pullups very difficult. So, since doing pushups was easier, I transferred to the Illinois Army National Guard from 1990 through 1996, were I once again was in the Transportatin Corps (88M) and the 1344th Trans Co. my unit went to Iraq in 1995.

I would feel more than honored if I could have this achievement, serving my country, show below my name on this forum. A do believe a veteran, whether active, reserve, or retired is a person who wrote a blank check to this country, payable up to and including his life. I appreciate the opportunity of being one of the many who have guaranteed our democratic freedoms and HONOR ALL THOSE WHO HAVE GUARANTEED ME THESE FREEDOMS.

    Ooh-Rah! and Hoo-Ahh!

USN, '06-'10, Point Loma (San Diego), got out as an STG3 (Sonar Tech 3rd Class) I must say it was the best most enlightening experience of my life. It puts this force/ fire inside of you that no one and nothing can put out...well no one except for yourself. I think more should at least go through the training...it would change a lot of the entitlement issues so prevalent today.

But I do want to take the time to thank all who are currently or have served & also their loved ones for the sacrifices they all have made. (though I know that none of you will see it like that...maybe except for the loved ones) I can't believe it took me this long to see this thread but you all are heroes in my book!!!!
