I served in the US Navy from 1971-73 as a boiler technician. I was assigned to a destroyer (USS Warrington DD-843) and a heavy cruiser (USS Newport News CA-148). I was aboard the Warrington when it went over two American mines in 1972 during the Vietnam War and had to be removed from service and scrapped as a result of the damage. The Warrington was the single most expensive weapon lost during the entire Vietnam War. I was also aboard the Newport News when one of its forward 8 inch gun mounts suffered an internal explosion killing 21 sailors.
The most enjoyable cruise I participated in was the North Atlantic (England, Denmark, Holland, Norway and Sweden etc.) cruise during the fall of 1973.
As a result of my service time, I do not remember my high school days/friends as vividly as my service time aboard both two ships and my fellow shipmates especially those that made the ultimate sacrifice. Memorial day is more than a holiday once a year.

Drafted on February 12th 68 I did my basic at Ft. Lenard Wood then to Ft. Irwin permanent party as carpenter with the 78th Engineers then in Sept. 68 to Sept 69 went to Nam and was with the 46th Engineers HQ at Long Binh then to B co. In Sagion and in Sept 69 went home to Chicago only did 18 months of active duty. And I would like to say Welcome Home to all my brothers that served in Nam and also would like to thank all our service personal for serving past and present.

I was in the Air Force for almost 8 years from April 89- Sept 96. Served as an Aircraft Electrical/Mechanical Technician on AWACS (E-3) at Tinker AFB, OK. Two deployments to Saudi Arabia after Desert Storm.

Was active Army until '98. Spent 1 year in South Korea (Camp Eagle), helping establish the first Apache battalion in Korea. The rest of my enlistment was spent in the 82'nd Airborne's Combat Aviation Brigade. My MOS was a 68H2P, which translates mainly to a job as eternal police call (haha) that was occasionally interrupted to work on aviation hydraulic systems and to be thrown from aircraft in flight.

The Exciting thing for Me right now , My Wife and Daughter gave Me a membership to the East End Seaport Museum in Greenport , Li. for My Birthday and last Fall We took the Ferry over and they got to see the Light and I got to see the Lens again set up inside the museum .
The Museum has Invited Us on there yearly cruise for members only to visit and tour Plum Island and the Plum Island Light Station on Aug. 6 ( Almost 43 yrs. since I left the Island )

I joined the Army in 1971. had basic training then went to Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic. Spent one year during the war then came back and was put in tech supply because they had to many mechanics returning. Lost some good friends over there and gained a new prospective of the world, and other peoples way of life. Even though we are having a bad time (economy) now, this is still the best place in the world to live.

Retired GySgt, USMC, 20 years, 0 time in combat. I was always somewhere else during the fighting, not by design. I mention the lack of combat experience as a way of showing respect to those did. Thanks to our veterans reguardless of how long they served.
Back to my experiences in the service I have been to many countries and have seen the difference in how others live. Our freedoms make it possible to live the lives we have. One of the most important freedoms we have is that of ownership of private property. Please keep that in mind we are losing this to government regs. Mike
