    Grand Theft

As most of you know I use waste cooking oil to heat my shop and house, this evening while mowing the grass discovered I'm being robbed by a full grown black bear.

From the rear of my shop where I store the oil, there's a trail of empty jugs leading to the rear of my property towards the river. Tomorrows project empty the remaining 16 liter jugs into a 45 gallon drum.

That would be a sight to see!

Jim: Question. What kind of bear is best?
    Dwight: That's a ridiculous question.
    Jim: False. Black bear.
Dwight: That's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought-
Jim: Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
Dwight: Bears don't... What is going on? What are you doing?!”

Thanks for the heads up. The drum is going inside the shop at the other house.

On a more serious note though, I didn't know bears would drink cooking oil.

In NJ we have a black bear problem. More bears per square mile in the US. I recently ran into a 450 pound male while mountain biking (came 10 feet from him). There are no attacks, but still it is a big animal to deal with. I think a 55 gallon drum will get turned over and agree about locking it in the shop. The biggest we had here that was hunted last year was over 800 pounds. When 800 pounds gets hungry, it will push its way into anything it wants. Be careful.

This one was 776 pounds. Look at the size of its head.

Do you know how to tell a black bear from a grizzly bear?
When it is chasing you run and climb up a tree.
If it climbs the tree and eats you, it is a black bear.
If it knocks the tree from underneath and eats you, it is a grizzly bear.

"The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.
They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.
Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.
It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.
Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper".

We've had a couple of bear attacks here in NH. A woman just the other day opened up her door to find a bear staring back at her. He ended up scratching up her arms until her dog intervened and scared him off. She thinks the smell of her cooking a pot roast attracted him. The thing is, people feed them and then they come to expect food. That's what the fish and game here say.

In my hay day my young bride could make me feel like a world champion.

On the way home from the Reservation seen a two year old black bear heading in the direction of my home site. Yea I procrastinated and never got the oil transferred, there's an old saying you reap what you sow.

When I lived out in Arizona, I did some camping for a few months in a tent. Ranger at one of the parks I stayed at told me some good stories of bears ripping open cars, tents, campers, etc. Make sure that sucker is locked so that bear isn't gonna get in.

NZ has no animals that can kill you, no snakes at all & only one spider that can poison you if it bit you.

I have never heard of someone getting badly hurt from one (or know someone who got bit in the first place...)

Oh, & no guns 'for protection' either.

On the other hand, someone walked into the bush & got lost after 60 feet, with a map & GPS... & called in a rescue chopper... idiot.
