That's very sad and a tragedy. He shouldn't have been there, but it's kinda fishy to me. Who in their right mind would balance such a piece of steel so precairiously that it could easily tilt and fall, a piece of steel so heavy as to crush a man instantly. Almost has the makings of a trap
Not a trap I'd say because that would be horrific to even think about. I think the man was where he shouldn't be and even though he was just trying to make some honest money he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Without more details its really too hard to say but it is very sad indeed.
Police say Martin did not have permission to be on the property. Sounds like he was stealing to me. Survival of the fittest. Trust me I have seen some things that people post about on here that make me scratch my head when I read it. If you have to ask should I do it then your probably shouldn't do it.
when i read the part about tilting up a steel plate to get to the motor the 1st thing i thought of was a dock plate or ramp of some kind.
dug a little deeper into the story and found another video online with more detail
below is a screen capture of the machine
I tried to put this on into where it belonged but the insert link links aren't showing up, and the edit isn't editing ; ) http://upsimple.com/view/anonymous/24362.jpg
the motor was mentioned in one of the several other reports i found on the net earlier
below is a screen capture of that report

Once again I am right. I can spot a thieve in this case about 800 miles away and I didn't even have to see the crime.
On the up side, that's one less person to be giving us a bad rep. That's prolly cool and heartless, but if a man robbing a bank died in the process of the robbery would ya feel sorry for him or thank god another theif is no longer stealing ?
I think it's a shame that a man died from his own stupidity, but at least he did not leave dependent children behind.
Here in the Detroit area we see all kinds of stupid stuff like this. It is borne out of desperation, but it is also because of ignorance and stupidity, and no small amount of dishonesty.
In all honesty, he got what he deserved, and the world is better off without him.
Kick him again fellas, I believe he twitched! You guys are just too good. It's sure great being among such a group of fine and distinguished, upstanding citizens. No need for a trial here, you guys done nailed it shut, case closed! If more people would only follow your lead, or maybe take the example of some foreign countries and just cut off their hand when they are caught stealing like this, or even better, when we were all younger, that would be a lesson to em, every time a kid stole a gumdrop! We'd be a nation of one armed bandits (IF we still had even ONE arm), and of course, heaven forbid if they'd tried lieing on top of that, then we'd be a nation of one armed mutes. I just hope when it comes time for me to settle my final score that you guys aren't there as my judge and jury, and Very Thankfully, I'm fairly sure you won't be

Wow, some of the statements on this thread are a bit harsh. Can't judge a man til you walk in his shoes. Might have been trying to feed his family in the only way he saw available to him.

Why don't you try walking in the property owners shoes. If this was a dock plate that they were planning on using it could have cost him several hundreds of dollars to repair what this guy was attempting to steal when he got killed, if he would have got the motor out before he was crushed to death. Which was valued at around $12.00 for scrap.
Now the property owner will likely be sued by the family of the victim because this man was killed while on his property and because it was his machine that killed him. Some ambulance chasing attorney will contact the family and tell them they could be entitled to hundreds of thousands of dollars because there loved one was killed and the owner of the property and the machine should have posted warning signs on the machine that it could be dangerous or that there were no trespassing signs posted warning the man that was killed he wasn't allowed to be there. This law suit if brought forward will likely cost the property owner several thousands of dollars in attorney fees to defend himself. All because this guy was trying to steal an electric motor worth $12.00 in a place he didn't have any business being regardless of whether or not there are signs posted or not.
I feed my family and I don't have to go out and steal other peoples property to do it.
Burly Guy I wonder if this was your electric motor he was trying to steal if you would still be saying that the statements that were made on this thread are a bit harsh.
Wow. I have been the property owner being stolen from.
All I am saying is the death penalty he received, and the cheering of that seems a bit excessive.
I don't think the guy deserved to die either. No body deserves to be killed in an accident. He was careless and that is why he was killed. Regardless he shouldn't have been doing what he was doing in the first place which was trying to steal something that didn't belong to him.
If he wasn't trying to steal the electric motor I'm sure all the members here on the forum would have more sympathy for this man and his family. But you won't find much sympathy for someone who was killed or injured while committing a crime, that's just the way it is.
I do agree with you no one should be cheering his death.
No one deserves to die because everyone is leaving someone behind when they finally kick the bucket. I am just saying he killed himself with stupidity. There is no excuse no matter what way and how you put it that could say he is innocent and didn't deserve what he had coming to him. He probably cut the chain or belt to steal the motor and just like that bam it slammed down on him and this criminal attempted to steal his last item was put to death. He made the decision to steal and paid the ultimate price for it. I didn't coerce him to climb in there and attempt what he did. I understand desperate people do desperate things but he is willing to steal to support what habit he probably had ie drugs or alcohol. I know in the news story his family said he was the best ever and never did anything bad. Apparently they didn't know him that well. I SEE IT ALL THE TIME IN SAINT LOUIS WHEN THERE IS A SHOOTING. The parents always say he was a good son and would never hurt anyone but he pulled out a gun and blasted away a few people. The public is gonna make a judgement on every criminal no matter the crime.
You wouldn't pity the bank robber killed in a stick up, why pity this guy ? That was my point not saying if him deserved it or not, just can't find any pity for him. Don't see gray just right and wrong, even if I believed the Harry hardluck story and had sympathy for his conditions don't make it right.
Burly and bear, you'll should. Know I got mad respect for both of ya. Just see it differently is all
