So, awhile ago I made a post about converting a pop up to a utility trailer. Over the last couple months, and about 3 ads on cl, a guy emailed me saying he had a pop up I could have...for free! Plus the guy already cut the top off and gutted most of the wood outta the inside. Only catch...I had to drive 2 hours to get it. Ok, no big deal...$75 in gas, vs. paying $300 for one around me (cheapest that was offered to me...for $300 I could just buy a trailer...)
So, I cruise on up and find it, sitting on the guys campsite like he told me, with the top sitting on it. Problem number one...the top was cut off and set back on, and I can't drive 70 mph down the highway...it'd blow off...ok so we can strap it down which leads to problem #2...it has no taillights. Well, it does...but their broke. Awsome. So, after leaning the top against a tree and a few good kicks later it's broken down to a managable size. Great. Now, you can see my truck tail lights. Still mildly illegal...but I didn't drive 2 hours to go home empty handed. Nuh uh. No way.
Boy, was my girlfriend unhappy to come home and find THAT sitting in the driveway...oh well, she will get over it.
Now, I'm considering my next steps. The frame is SOLID, tires are BRAND NEW, but the sides are a little rough. I could just gut it the rest of the way, and use it like that, but the wood in the sides seems to be a little rotten and I'm not 100% on the floor...so i'm thinking of stripping it down to the frame, bolting some plywood down, and building stake sides, along with a removeable back and some ramps, or possibly a folding rear gate to use as a ramp. Any thought/suggestions?
My only problem is it's getting cold out, the days are shorter, and theirs alot to be done...I've done some research and seen people shorten frames, thats out of the question for me...I don't have enough time right now.
