Here in the north end of NJ we are getting high wind gusts and little rain for now (8:00 AM Monday). Tonight into tomorrow is when it hits the fan.
Mass has a presidential ordered state of emergency
No school, governor asked businesses to close.
Stupid nanny state. Everyone thinks the sky is falling!
It is raining lightly out.
Worked 12 hr tour last night got home at 745am. Not looking pretty . Forecast is for a 10 to 12 ft storm surge at high tide later today for long island, ny harbor, and nj, and long island sound. Basically a lot of areas will be under water! If anyone has family or friends that said they are riding it out tell them to LEAVE NOW. the way it's setting up the eye will be hitting around forked river NJ. winds will intensify to 75 mph up to 90 mph plus sustained. Expecting waves heighten of up to 10 ft+. Just to give you an idea for anyone that knows the Rockaway Beach area in Queens, the beaches were under water last night with water coming up under the boardwalks. right now it's not a question of if power will go out it is when. Be safe and smart everyone.

I think everyone in the northeast was ready early for this one after last years October snow disaster lots of precautions were taken. Better safe then sorry!
Words alone cannot describe what is going on and what has happened. I am fortunate in that my work place is open. My home has no electric and we only had one tree hit our house. There are gas station waiting lines over 1/2 mile long with fights and police action.
I think most of the shore is wiped clean not only here, but NY too. Crazy.
Pictures from Sandy's impact
With the economy being bad, this was just another kick in the balls. It will take a while to get back up from this one. Schools are closed for the week and no info on when gas truck can make it in and power gets restored.
good luck to ya Pete, and to everybody up there. Some say it's worse than it was after Katrina, and that is certainly one place i would not have cared to be
Just a quick update from long island. Lost power here at 515pm om Monday and service was restored yesterday. I am one of the lucky ones and I thank God for that. The long island shore line has been decimated from Fire Island west to Breezy Point in Queens. Much the same type of damage as the NJ shoreline. Unfortunately not all listened to the advice to evacuate and the body count is on the rise. What once had beautiful board walks are no longer. And I mean that the boardwalks have been washed inland in some spots up to a half mile. A police pct in Rockaway was flooded out and officers had to be rescued since the tidal surge was so fast, why they were ordered in there and not on standby in another area is a big question that is yet to be answered. Over 100 homes were decimated by fires in one neighborhood since the fire department could not get apparatus to the scene and could not locate working fire hydrants to get water one the fire due to he tidal surge.
As far as further inland over 900,000 were without power by the first day just on Long Island. Gas has now become a problem for those needing it to power generators. The story's of half mile long lines are true. I myself had to siphon gas from my car for my gen yesterday before the power came back. In my town alone there is one gas station left with gas and by the end of the day they will be dry with no scheduled deliveries. Fights have broken out at some stations and guns have been pulled in a few instances. Luckily no shots have been fired.....yet. School has been closed all week, but lots of kids were out trick or treating on Wednesday which kind of brought a little normalcy back, if not for the adults at least for the kids.
I hope that this post finds all of you and your families safe and sound.
JPete hang in there man. We bent but didn't break. It will all be back together again, it just may take longer this time. Be well and be safe.
Thanks for the update Brasscatcher...Thoughts and Prayers are with you all.

We all know that picture is of a thief and not a scrapper, but most don't know the difference and we all get lumped together.

I got power last night. I got gas last week at 4AM in upstate NY and was grateful for what I got. Things are getting more normal now and gas lines are not too bad.
