Just a quick update from long island. Lost power here at 515pm om Monday and service was restored yesterday. I am one of the lucky ones and I thank God for that. The long island shore line has been decimated from Fire Island west to Breezy Point in Queens. Much the same type of damage as the NJ shoreline. Unfortunately not all listened to the advice to evacuate and the body count is on the rise. What once had beautiful board walks are no longer. And I mean that the boardwalks have been washed inland in some spots up to a half mile. A police pct in Rockaway was flooded out and officers had to be rescued since the tidal surge was so fast, why they were ordered in there and not on standby in another area is a big question that is yet to be answered. Over 100 homes were decimated by fires in one neighborhood since the fire department could not get apparatus to the scene and could not locate working fire hydrants to get water one the fire due to he tidal surge.
As far as further inland over 900,000 were without power by the first day just on Long Island. Gas has now become a problem for those needing it to power generators. The story's of half mile long lines are true. I myself had to siphon gas from my car for my gen yesterday before the power came back. In my town alone there is one gas station left with gas and by the end of the day they will be dry with no scheduled deliveries. Fights have broken out at some stations and guns have been pulled in a few instances. Luckily no shots have been fired.....yet. School has been closed all week, but lots of kids were out trick or treating on Wednesday which kind of brought a little normalcy back, if not for the adults at least for the kids.
I hope that this post finds all of you and your families safe and sound.
JPete hang in there man. We bent but didn't break. It will all be back together again, it just may take longer this time. Be well and be safe.
