Heh...My sandbar gets a nice storm every hurricane season, we had irene last year, this year we'll get a taste of sandy. Cat 1 storm tho, so me and the dogs will stay at the house while the wife heads to the hotel she works at. I guess I can understand why all you northern folks are freaking out..high winds and flooding it cities unused to it does create a bit of havoc. I should be more worried but I deal with this year after year, not to mention being 2 miles out in the ocean I'm used to it and have a safe place to go if need be. Cat 1 storm tho is sit at home an drink some beer while breaking things down. 2 or higher and me and the dogs head up to the hotel with the wife. Otherwise..a really cool thunderstorm...lol.

By the time it reaches you all up north it'll be a Tropical storm/Nor'easter. Pssh..nothing like Irene.
Either way wish everyone the best who is in the path and do be smart..and safe.

Sirscrapalot - Is going to be busy next week with flood damaged items and clean outs.

While it may only be a tropical storm by the time it gets to us, if it snuggles up to a high pressure system looming further up north we have the classic "Perfect Storm" This is what us New Yorkers are really concerned about. The combined winds around both merge to bring an awful northeast storm, capable of massive coastal erosion. Now if this storm hits at high tide....well ugly things will happen

I just heard that our weather forecasters are calling it "Frankenstorm" cause of the 2 different storms merging, further inland might be getting a snowstorm,,,OHHH

    Yep Mech.

Last I herd They saying once the storm meets up with the cold air from the west will produce some nice snow as far inland as Ohio. It's gonna be a messy bastard of a storm, but..enough prep time folks should do a lot better then they did with Irene up the eastern seaboard.

I'll be taking today off from scrapping to prep the house and such for the storm and park the van uphill..as my sandbar and driveway WILL flood out...good thing I still have some water wings from when the niece visited...lol.

Again good luck to all in the path, whether your getting the full brunt or just the snow part. Common sense will see you thru safely.

Sirscrapalot - Wearing his storm prep hat today and will update as he can.

They are actually calling for power outages that may run until election day or longer. Hopefully that will not happen, but people will need to prepare.

Frankenstorm is a very real title for this IF it all comes together. We are talking a snow and ice hurricane up that way. Crazy stuff.

We got the tail end of Ike a few years ago when I was in a Cincinnati suburb. It was tropical storm strength winds with hurricane force gusts. The tree devastation was amazing. Many of the local roads were impassable for days due to downed trees. I couldn't get to work the next day because both of the routes I took were blocked.

At one point almost a million people were without power and for some it was close to a week before it came back on. There were deaths from fires and two people on a motorcycle were killed when a tree fell on them. One person died when a tree came through a window and hit them.

We had gotten warnings of high winds, but few people were prepared for what actually happened. Not that many hurricanes in Ohio! With the power out, we had to depend on the radio for information and nothing much was said about the storm. My scanner was going off non stop with accidents and calls for help.

In my opinion, the warnings -even if they are overkill-are a good thing. Although, I'm not sure with this storm that the volume of warning is overkill.

NYC has state of emergency and I was told to prepare for 12 hrs tours or longer starting Sunday. City is afraid the subways will be under water and with the full moon and tides being high when Sandy makes landfall they just might be. We will see. Turned in some ewaste today to have cash on hand if power goes down, stocked up on water got the lanterns ready. Will probably loose power since if you fart on Long Island too hard the power goes out...lol....be safe everyone and remember property can be replaced your lives can't. If your told to get out then get out while the gettin is good. The biggest problem for first responders is not the storm but the people that don't heed warnings to leave and then have to be rescued when tshtf. Be safe and smart!!!

We all know it is going to hit the fan. No two ways about it. It is just a matter of how long we lose power and how much damage is done.
Route 287 is a major interstate. This was Irene:
Hurricane Irene wreaks havoc on New Jersey highways | NJ.com

It sucked. Then Tropical storm Lee, then the Halloween storm that dropped almost a foot of snow last year and took out trees and power lines.
Not too much you can do about it, other than prepare for the worst.......or move!

I posted a thread about this, sort of, before seeing this one.

Anyways, I pray for all affected, as we are getting hit with the full force of the storm!
