    made fun of...

OK. I am new to professional scrapping. Breaking down to make more money. Also doing tons of reading on scrapping computers and such. With that being said. Almost everyone I mention this to. They laugh and say what they have to say. I try to explain it the best I can. Thinking that the money part will get some attention. But to no avail. Still laughs and talking trash more or less. I was curious if anyone else has had this response from people. I mean it is a way to make money. And if done right you can make a living. Either way I ordered some business cards this evening and I'm ready to get more serious. Those people are my motivation to make it happen. Aswell as this site and the people who post on it. Just thought I'd share my thoughts. Yours?

Short of not being able to find scrap, competition is your worst scenario.

I find, that soon after I have explained anything to someone, that item suddenly dissapears just as quick they did.

Like this> "Hey I have a broken microwave oven if you want it"
    "Sure, I'll have it"
"What do you want it for?"
"I scrap them down for their metal"
"What do you do with the metal?"
"I sell it to a scrapmetal dealer"
"How much do you get for it?"
    "Coppers worth $7 a Kg"
"How much coppers in a microwave?"
"About a Kg, when can you drop off the microwave?"
    "What microwave?"

Keep some cards with you and every time you meet someone (family-friends) just hand them a card or two. You may answer a question or two but just explain that you recycle to keep stuff out of the landfills.
Don't enlighten them as eesakiwi talked about, that gives them an idea that there might be money in this. If you approach people the right way, they will tell others and next thing you know the calls will start. It doesn't happen overnite.
But like Mick's sig' says; People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

You have to adapt in this biz....I started out curb shopping and dumpster diving....Once I got my money up it is strictly auctions, re-selling and the stuff that does not work gets scrapped.....Be flexible and you'll make it.....Just remember in this biz it takes money to make money.....When u first start out save every penny you can......Live cheap, eat cheaper, and maximize your profits vs. your time....Anyways I hope this helps

You've been in the military..... use that thick skin. Brush it off and let it go. Albert Einstein was made fun of his whole life! He was told he was stupid as a child and as an adult laughed at when he introduced his cosmological constant theory(which ironically is the same formula scientists use today to explain the very fast expansion of the universe). Look at all the great things he did! So, if you cant use all the negativity as fuel for success, then just punch them in the face.

Just punch them in the face.

Why do you care WHAT they think? They should care what you think.

Most of the people giving you a hard time are just jealous and wish they had the balls to do what your doing. At some point you can and will be making more money then folks that invested a lot of time and money in a collage education that got them no more then a poor paying job that they have to be at from 8-430...M-F.

Coworkers always laughed at me, but I always got a better laugh when I was giving them a loan until payday.

No worries dude, I like those people because they are the ones who contribute the most by throwing out stuff. Their lack of knowledge and laughter is your cash. Be confident in what you are doing and keep on rollin. I made business cards and they have brought me many call backs and good stuff. For example 34 crt monitors.
