I can greatly appreciate your attitude towards your opinion on the scrap metal world works. Matter of fact, I welcome it. Provides a greater/wider stance on the bounce of metal prices. Matter of fact, I for one hope prices go down, which goes against most out here. Fits into my "business" model better, if one could say I have one. I just know what I've read/seen, and my opinions/outlook match more of what I've seen/had to deal with. What I'm doing is a small scale, can't be done (at this point) on a greater scale, and fits me just fine. I get what I expect out of it, and provides me with a landing pad to maybe take it bigger.

It's also not so cut and dry to resell to the public...whole new set of regulations and many would have to charge sales tax if the person buying didn't have a wholesale license.

That's why I stick to the 100 bucks and under... most yards can hide that. Plus alot of these yards all sell to one of the bigger yards here, at least for the stuff I'm dealing in. It's back of the truck if there is room kinda stuff. I don't want to make a big splash and have someone ask, "Why the drop in x product"? I know I'm making a bigger deal out of this than I should, but I like to create some action, and out of 30 some "tips", there is the one stickler that I didn't think about.

OK, to get this straight...You are asking for advice without divulging any details, on something that may or may not be illegal? You want to roll into a scrapyard with a $100 bill and make a backdoor deal that you said: "most yards can hide that"

We have a name for people like you in the industry...gypsies. My experience with dealing with gypsies is that only one person wins when you do a transaction with them, and it isn't the scrapyard.

If you came to my scrapyard and tried to make a dodgy deal I would tell you to hit the road.

I never considered it so much "illegal"

I just used the 100 dollar mark as an easy in easy out. I don't really think they are losing money on me as I do all the work. They just have to look at the scale on the in and out. 5 minutes and I'm gone. I don't want to say what I'm doing because anyone out here could do it. Not exactly illegal except for sales tax. Which I would have no problem paying. It's up to them.

One scrap yard by me is selling to the public. They even have an Artist Paradise 2 times a month from 630 am - 830 am to explore the entire yard!

Seems like a pretty sharp idea...you just need to let them know you will buy computers.........

The problem is it would be a flat rate, they would set all the computers they get to the side and I can come by once a week to pick them up (no cherry picking). It doesn't sound like a bad deal until you consider that many computers could be missing hard drives and memory and I would be paying roughly 6.50 a piece. If you have a yard you use all the time and build a relationship many times there are deals to be made.
what if you offer.30 lb but you get to pick

Well with out knowing all the details i have heard enough from you,you are what is known as a s--t bum, what do you have some secret vision that none of us has heard of, i don't think so.
Your secret item that you want a scrap yard owner to hid a hunderd bucks from his books from, come on man get real.this forem helps members help members, not story telling and your kwowlage of margins on what yards make is just plain wrong. The only thing that makes sence to me about your post is that this is a public forem and once and a while this is the garbage that some professor like you writes.

Ok, I can live with this. What scrap yards make is listed in another thread. Plain and simple. Yard owners even chimed in.
I find it hard to believe scrap yards are able to sell the product they have for 3-4 times as much when the prices are listed daily, what the markets pay, on the internet. What I am doing is not a secret, per se, as others do it. I just learned early on to start keeping my mouth shut. Not a big deal. In real life I have a big mouth, and as I've gotten old, I've learned to keep it shut. I was/is/am tired of making others money. Now it's my turn. I really could care less what the yard owner does with the hundred dollars. I do know that most don't want to sell large amounts to the public because then they turn retail. And it starts to add another line to tax time paperwork.

P.S. Trying to piss me off to the point I "breakdown" and validate what I'm doing with what I'm doing isn't going to work. Bigger, faster, stronger men have tried.

But I digress. This has turned interesting. Don't worry, someday, someone from this board will meet me and validate I'm not some hidden troll.

It's too much work for them, they are willing to set them to the side for me and allow me to buy them, but that is as far as it goes. This is kind of a favor because I have built a decent relationship with the yard. They understand I want the boards and originally wanted .33# and came down to .27#. They aren't really excited about selling me the computers but are willing to, it kind of a "this is what we will sell them to you for" kind of deal. There wouldn't be a contract, just a pile I need to pick up (good old country boys). The only reason I haven't taken advantage of the deal is because I've been picking up computers and network equipment in the 1.00-3.50 range at auction and it's been steady. If they don't change their minds, I may do something with them this summer and see how I do.

You know what I'm wondering? What the point of this thread is. You have a guy who is not making any sense (at least to me), who is buying some "magic" material that scrap yards are willing to sell to to this guy at the same price that they are getting for it, AND somehow they let you buy only $100 worth of product from them. If I was a scrap yard, I would laugh and ask if you were joking if someone was trying to buy only $100 worth of product from me. If I really wanted to sell someone any amount of product, it would have to be in the thousands to tens of thousands of dollars range for me to even consider it. $100 is like pocket change to yards, I'm wondering why they are even considering selling to you. Here is the other thing I'm confused about. If you are buying product at the same rate that the yard sells it for, how do you make any profit? I'm assuming you are selling it to another yard, but those are some TIGHT profit margins. This seems pretty sketchy to me.

Nope, not reselling to any yards. You people are over thinking this waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. There was an article posted about the "artists"... they are selling 5 dollars worth of product... and the yard owner has to work harder to sell that to them. I'm in, fill my whatever I brought, weigh it, pay it, out the door. This isn't anything magic.

Ok, you busted me. I'll tell you what I'm doing. I go in, look in the starter/alternator pile, buy it for what they get, then sell them to a core buyer. Happy now?

If that makes you happy. So be it. But it's not true.

I really think you answered your own question...

You aren't offering any money or deal that makes the yard money, you are arrogant, condescending, and have some sort of feeling of entitlement (how dare they not take your crappy deal), maybe they just don't like you. Learn some people skills.

This thread reminds me of a skit I saw loooong ago ... maybe on SNL? or something similar. I don't remember all the details, but the catchphrase was this old toothless curmudgeonly dude that kept asking the proprietor of the store, "What da cash-money price is??? What da cash-money price is???"
