    Possible new forum

I was thinking about sending admin a message on a new forum idea, but wanted to see how many people might see a use for it. I was thinking about a forum where scrappers could post businesses that will pay for scrap not commonly seen at most scrap yards. It could give folks in that area new things they might be able to keep an eye out for. Example, when I was looking at a website of a scrapyard in the Houston area one of the things they listed was they buy alkaline batteries (AAA, AA, C & D). I have never seen a yard that will pay for these before. Other things that might be listed could be cardboard, glass, plastic, etc, anything out of the ordinary that a yard pays for. What can be listed is the out of the ordinary scrap they are purchasing and the location.

Any thoughts on how useful this might be?

Good idea. I'm looking for a market in the NE for electronics as well as well as the batteries you listed. Also NiCAD batteries.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Awesome idea. Would this site you were looking at possibly be B.W. Recycling Inc.? I happened across that website and there were a lot of misc. items that they were buying. I was actually gonna get some stuff together and see what they actually pay for some of the items. I have a box of the AOL disks that they used to send out as well as demo discs for games. Gonna see what they are paying for those and then I could advertise that I will pick those up in the area along with metal and electronics.

Mick, this site does buy NiCAD batteries if you are interested, here is the link.

Do they have a site anywhere near Maine? It's showing Texas and Florida. You can't mail batteries.

We were considering a section where everyone could list scrap yards, metal buyers, refiners etc.

To be honest, the concern is whether or not enough people will participate in it, to make it worth adding a new section to the forum.

How would this benefit you guys the most? A forum where everybody can list businesses whom buy scrap metal would be great, but it would be difficult to dedicate a whole section to just oddball recycling centers.

What would be better, is a section where everybody can list all types of places like scrap yards, junk yards, places that buy cores, precious metal refiners, etc.

Maybe make it a forum where yards like that can advertise what odd things they buy as well as normal scrappers posting?

I would think a general scrap yard locator which could include the specialty yards. I'm really hoping to, over time as my business grows, locate yards which pay more than the local ones and still be economically feasible for travel. I have four yards locally and another smaller three somewhat close. Two are owned by the same company and all have really similar rates. So, it basically comes down to personality and other personal factors in selecting a yard. Real business decisions never enter into it.

It could be a subsection of this same forum. Any time someone sees a new oddball item that a yard is paying for they could start a new thread listing it, and if anyone knows of any other yards buying the same thing they could mention it under that same thread. I wasn't thinking of a large sub forum here, more of one like the "non ferrous metal prices" under the metal prices forum. Maybe something called "oddball scrap prices" under that same forum.

What website were you looking at? I live in the Houston area, and have never known any yard to accept these except for mixed scrap.
