What is your "Thanks per Post Average (TPA)" on this Forum?

I realize the OP mentioned his post was to been in a joking manner. They also made jokes about the space shuttle Challenger.
Fact is, I actually do believe, some would rather cut off their click finger than to scroll over there and click "thanks", and will go to great measures to avoid it. Although I find that rather comical at times, I also believe at the end of the day, what's most important was what you gave, and not just what you got.
There was a university study done not too long ago which documented the differences in obituaries over the last hundred years. They found a hundred years ago the obits mostly spoke of a mans character, the things he had contributed and the deeds he had done, where today they were found to mostly speak of a mans wealth and possessions.
There were also some worthy mentions, in another big book, of an extremely thankless generation, being near the end of our thankless road, and sometimes I wonder just how far away that day can actually be.
Although it is highly visible here, this certainly isn't restricted to SMF or the scrapping community, but goes the world over, and altho it's led mostly by the "developed" countries, if you look at the countries where there is little, and what little they had, has been taken away, such as the recent typhoon victims in the Philippines, and other places where both natural or manmade disasters have ravaged their lives and their world. They'd be thankful for the crumbs that fell from our plates, and that's even more reason to be thankful for what we have, and that we live in such a land as what we do, and not so worried about what's the score, or how much more can i get, before we reach the end of that road.
I truly do believe one day the more important question will be, not how much did you get, but instead, how much did you give.

It is interesting where this thread has gone and has been unexpected. What was originally intending as a light-hearted Joke some have taken as a serious topic about thankfulness. I feel some seem to imply clicking the thank button has some kind of link to a man's true character and how thankful they are in real life, I disagree. Bear seems to imply that if you arent clicking "thanks" you are part of the "thankless generation" or someone that is more interested talking about possessions in obituaries rather than character.

For the record I am very grateful for this web forum its contents and the people that contribute to it. It has helped me get my business to where it is now. I think that the thank button is a small way to show one's appreciation. I dont use it much and feel that a much better way to show appreciation is to share the buyers you find, new techniques, tools, answer questions that other members have, responding in a timely manner, taking the time to take pictures for your post, share links, make videos, give thorough answers, share new ideas, and give your time to the web forum.

Not trying to speak for Bear here, an hell I've been avoiding even posting in this thread. I think he was meaning more to people who've been here for awhile an not even a single thanks given. or a very low amount. I understand what you intended with this post, hence me not chiming in other then my usual insanity.

It's here. Use it if you want, or don't. It bothers me not. I choose to use it to express my thanks for sharing the advice or just for a useful post, or if your just plain crazier then I am. I'm thanks for all the advice, help, tips, tricks, an laughs you all provide since I joined.

If you choose not..that's your call. I'm not here to judge.

mrsamsonite: I want to publicly apologize for starting the rant. I did mean what I said. But I may have come off as really foul about it.. there was a lot nicer way to state my opinion without sounding like an arse! So I apologize.

I concur with other posters that I think the thanking part of it lends itself to a nice "community." I relate the thanking/appreciating from both sides. I really see the thanks as no different than if my neighbor helped me lift a 1000 lb washing machine onto my trailer, or picked up my garbage cans for me just because. I'd just say "thank you" and all of you are my "internet neighbors" You guys give me advice on an obstacle you have already overcome, you give seasoned information for something a lot of people may be very green at. But that is what a community is to me- online or "Main Street USA" The giving of time and information, the sharing, the caring about others- makes a community-- no matter where it sits. I do my best to return that favor. There are quite a bit of guys and gals here that are far more knowledgeable about scrap than I.. and I personally appreciate a place where people don't make you feel stupid for asking.

Mrsamsonite, I believe it is more interesting how you have adapted my message to be a personal attack on yourself, and the forum, when it was purely observational, as I even specified it to be, not of yourself or the forum, but of the world as a whole. You keep claiming that your formula was a joke, but what were your words there? In your original post, this a formula for what??

I felt that this quote from you bear was pretty direct towards me also using third person as well by saying "some would rather cut off their click finger....." But, if you say that it wasn't directed towards me then I will take your word for it and I can just let it go.

To respond to this quote you gave about me. I stick to what I had said "I think that the thank button is a small way to show one's appreciation. I dont use it much" I feel one's actions play a far better role to show appreciation than just clicking the thank button. The thank button is cool and I use it sometime but, in my previous comment I tell what is a more important way to show thanks for other.

I know where I stand and that I am thankful. I feel the thank button cannot determine what a mans true thankfulness is.

From acknowledging your claim that the OP was a joke onward, I went directly into a much larger picture, one which you either fail to see, or don't wish to hear about. Fact is sam, We Are All Too Often Too Thankless. If you insist on taking this as a personal attack on yourself, I can't change that. Whether it's here on the forum, or down on the street, our actions don't come from the clicky button, it goes much deeper than that, but still sam, in either place, it shows, and I can't change that for you either

I've got to admit, sam, it just sank in to me a little while ago where you've been coming from. I in no way intended my post to be an attack of any sort, most of all not on you personally. I thought that I would take this opportunity to share something I have been checking out. It has to do selling books. I will post a separate thread later when I actually send the books in. Here are some book buyers that I have found. I havent really seen anything about this yet on SMF, perhaps I am wrong.

1. Sell Books Online and Sell Back Textbooks At sellbackyourBook.com Shipping is free and I typed in several ISBN #s and I got any where from .25 to 1.50. I currently recycle books for $30/ton instead of paying to dispose but, if I could make .25- $1.50 per book without the hassle of selling them individually that would be great.

2. Amazon.com: Sell Your Books

this is the amazon book trade-in. You get a little bit for each book on the pricelist but, you get amazon credit instead of cash which works with me. I believe the shipping is free as well.


Has anyone tried one of these two options? I know many have tried using the amazon store or ebay to sell individual books but, this seem to be quick and easy way to make a little more without taking too much time away from other jobs.
