My Dad used to make beer and wine, but I never got interested in it much until a few years ago. The kits were too pricey for my fancy, and I never got close enough to a brewing supply to shop around, but about 3 years back I scrubbed up one of Dad's old carboys(he had several of the big glass ones here) and with some reading on a brewing forum tried brewing some beer with some malted barley from a health food store and plain bakers yeast from the grocery. The barley was pricey too and I only used one bottle(it called for two). The stuff actually turned out pretty decent after awhile.
I tried two or three other times, using different variations of recipes but never got any more that was haha, even drinkable. I let it go for a long time, and just recently mixed up another batch, which is still in the bubbling stage. I'm going with the original formula I used with the first batch, and some added tips from a friend about the bottling process. We'll know in a couple of months if I'll ever make it as a brewer ; )
Good luck with yours man
