What does your yard accept in the shred pile? - Page 2

I've never seen anything crazy dumped at my yard like Christmas trees but I'm sure if you brought that they wouldn't care they're very lenient . One time I picked up a load with a cast iron boiler and everything else was shred it was a big load , one pole was filled with concrete I told them if they take the pole with concrete they can have the cast iron at shred price he said okay , when I got to the window to get paid he gave 1 penny a pound more then shred and 1 less than cast iron - I love my yard

The yard I frequent most is pretty lenient, and there is another about 15 miles down the road that is not. My yard will take the dishwashers with the plastic bodies as is, but I also leave all the good stuff on it, like the electric motor, wiring harness, etc. Even though I know they would take it as is I still remove stuff like any cloth or heavy plastic that is easily removed. They have commented before that I bring in cleaner scrap that most people, which is good because if they start to get tighter then they will remember me and maybe be more lenient than with others on occasion. Plus I prefer to go by the addage of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Although they will NOT take rims with the rubber tires still on them for anyone.

Update:

I got about 30 or so old tires on steel rims, all rusty, mostly ancient whitewall tires. Cut the tires off the rims with a utility knife / hook blade leaving the bead and some of the sidewall on the rim.

Took them all the the scrap yard and got paid $170/ton and the canadian tire up the street took all the cut up tires for free.

life is good.

At the end of the day the yards are paying for metal that they can on sell. Not all the extraneous crap. I believe in giving what I'm paid for. Consequently I always try to minimise plastic going into the light gauge (shred) bin.

I agree, I have never heard of any scrap yards accepting porcelain like that. Wish there was one around here, I could about double my income.

im sure if i showed up with a trailer full of toilets they would tell me to kick rocks. When i took a load in yesterday the guy in front of me had a few toilets and sinks in his load along with a window unit a wood table some clean aluminum all mixed in with his load of shred. And they unloaded him like it was the norm. They wont let me offload microwaves. But they buy his toilets.

My main yard wont take bikes with tires on them, dishwashers with plastic tubs or chain link fence. I feel if you remove the easy non metal stuff thats what they like to see. After all they just pass on these items to another buyer before the stuff gets shredded. And once the stuff gets shredded it all gets processed even the fluff!

The plumbing place where I have been picking up all the dishwashers throw toilets in their dumpster all the time. I could make a killing out of it.

Where I go in Mesa they are lenient but will look before you dump the stuff. I have seen people dump a load of concrete and bricks that was under their pile of tubing. I know the people who run the yard that is veteran owned. They take it very seriously when someone tries to rip them off and they remember the next time.

My yard is pretty lenient. I just remove the quick and fast plastic from printers, and they take those. I leave everything I can on computers, and stuff them full of steel bits and pieces. With all that, I can rack up weight pretty quickly. But for the size I operate, I only take in about 350-450 lbs of steel every load. Which happens about 1 time per month. I wish my yard would let me take things I find in the shred pile. After all, it's no loss to them. The weight of what I take means less payout for me and the yard keeps the money and my sold material. No loss for them, gain for me. But they don't yet. I might ask them directly with that logic and see if they ever let me do it.

the yards near me are not as lenient as many of the yards you guys describe but i think we get paid a higher rate for steel & shred so maybe thats why theyre so strict
i get R3.per kg for steel and R2,50 for shred/sub grade.

u guys can do the necessary conversions .

there is a tolerance level for sub grade/shred but not much.

The yards around where I scrap buy a lot of junk with a lot of plastic. They buy plastic tub dishwashers, tires on rims, keyboards and computer related items (stuff loaded with 70% plastic by weight). They take just about anything but pay a whopping $0.035/lb. It does help that their regional shredding and processing facility is in town. Another more picky yard pays more for items with a higher percentage of metal by weight. They also don't charge any freon draining fees (typically $10 per item around here).
