    Huge flag pole

No I am not scrapping one out. In my full time job I work construction. This week we started one of the largest flagpoles ever. It will stand a little over 400ft tall when completed. The flag that sits on top of it will be 300ft by 100ft. Just huge.
There is going to be a little over 650 yards of concrete and 100,000 lbs of rebar tied in. The hole for the base is supposed to be 10ft deep and 80ft round.
Once the fun work begins I will start taking pics and post them on here. Should be interesting.

It is a large insurance company in Wisconsin. There will also be an antique Ferris wheel that the employees can ride to get from the first floor to the second. Should be a fun job.

The pole is 400 ft in height, and the hole for the base is 10 ft deep. I wonder what kind of wind loads a giant flag + pole experience. Do you know if any part of the pole itself goes into the ground, or if it's just secured to the footing with some kind of flange and anchor bolts?

Can't wait to see pictures of how something like this is done.

This is their 3rd or 4th attempt at this. One of them tipped over with the wind, and it was 338ft in the air. That was several years ago. They are still fighting the engineering company in court.
From what I was told this one will be 8ft in the ground and secured to the footings. It is designed identically to a wind tower. The other ones were deep (20-30ft) but not as big of a circumference. I hope this works cause it will be awesome to see.
Never thought of looking it up, but if you google "acuity flagpole" you can see the other attempts. One was 150ft and one was 338ft.

Yea they tell me I need(mandatory) to pay $700 a month for any employee that works over 20 hours a week! (slightly teasing)

Well, I guess that's one way to create jobs.

Interesting side note (from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 1, 2007, accessed at http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/29263794.html):
"Wisconsin offered the company $7 million worth of incentives in early 2003 toward a $40 million expansion of its home office in Sheboygan after the company said Illinois had offered even more.
The Acuity complex hugging the east side of I-43 is easy to spot because of one prominent feature: the massive U.S. flag atop a 338-foot pole, tallest in the United States, Acuity boasts.
The corporation's distinctive $450,000 flagpole was part of the expansion project, but according to the company was not erected with state funds."

That's referring to one of the poles that failed and had to be removed.

Er, sounds as if its manliness is flagging. Perhaps a prescription from the doctor is what it needs.

3RD. attempt that's a job creator for sure. As for profits? Almost like a government project! I do like flag poles, put my life on the line for what fly's above them on more than one occasion, it's a sentimental thing for me. Some don't have that same view of flag poles and I respect that too! Then again some don't get to look at flag poles anymore as they went into the ground with a flag.

I'm sure at some point someone driving by or someone that works/lives by there will be offended by the Flag...then the government will sue them to take it down.

Mikeinreco I'm with you it would be way more efficient to have slides from floor to floor.

Hold on, now. Let's get real. These poor folks should have slides to go down and a ferris wheel to go up.

Maybe owner should install one of the old poles in his office. Like a "firemans pole" and away he goes!

The size of the flag is considerably less than the original plans. It will now be 60' by 130'. Still be 400plus ft high but smaller flag. Pics are coming. Pole is coming Monday the 14th of April.
