    Sh!t H!t the Fan

Last night we were driving home on a dark two lane road and the car in front of us got taken out by a Ford ranger that ran a stop sign at 30 mph. Both vehicles ended up 40 feet off the road and took out 20 feet of chain link fence. I pulled over and tried to help out and the guy from the truck was hysterical and rambling around and the other driver was hurt real bad. It was chaos until the medics showed up and I couldn't get the guy to shut up or sit down. You never know whats going to happen another 10 or 20 secs I would have been wearing that truck bumper. If you have a first aid kit get some big 4" X 5" gauze pads or something to put pressure with it's not possible to treat a massive head wound with a band aid.

Scary stuff there, really makes you thankful for just how lucky you really are. Been a few secs from being involved in several serious accidents, keep your eyes wide open and drive defensively.

Sorry you had what sounds like a very scary experience. I also learned about first aid kits awhile back while trying to do what I could at a bad accident. Yes your average first aid kit is just about useless at a bad accident. Band Aides are ok for the little cuts we get, but in a serious accident your going to need a lot of sterile large gauze pads. One time is all it took for me to rethink and restock the first aid kit.

similar situation happened while I was helping a friend move. pulled my old highschool friend out of her upside down truck, couldn't do much but comfort her as the u haul had nothing in it.
we did have a crowbar in the back to get the door open at least. loaded up the first aid kit in the truck the next day.

Feminine Napkins are a good thing to put in a kit as the are sterile, easy to open and absorb a lot of blood...no joke.

Thanks for everyone's replies.I had a nurse recommend feminine napkins yesterday said they used them at the hospital for wounds. Another thing that came in handy was a smartphone with a flashlight app helped see things better.

I rolled my quad and ripped the side of my leg open real bad up at the lake. Probably about 8in long gash. Inch or so wide. Road rash all up my leg. Should have gotten stitches but never did. (Friggin awesome scar!) Ran out of gauze so someone grabbed a pad and threw it on. Never even thought about that and it worked great. My pride was a little hurt, and my buddy's had lots of ammunition for jokes that weekend but hey, it worked!
If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

Sounds like we have a new addition for our first aid kits!

A buddy of mine who is an EMT carries both tampons and pads in his car first aide kit, tampons work great for gunshot wounds.

I want to say I've herd about the tampon thing before from friends in the military an trauma side medical fields.

Either way good advice, an does make sense.

Sirscrapalot - Now all you fella's who have to go pick those up for you lady, can play it off like your stocking up the first aid kit.

Oh yeah. I almost never leave home without my first aid kit. I carry around a large Vietnam era Alice Pack. The pockets are full of a few basic medical supplies. A couple bottles of alcohol and peroxide, about 50 6x6 gauze pads, a roll of gauze, a few rolls of medical tape, standard bandages, and a lot of other crap because it doubles as a survival kit in case i do anything stupid... I also carry a small serrated edge knife that has a glass breaker and seatbelt cutter on it. Soon ill be adding a Taurus Model 65 .357 to the mix but thats a completely different topic...

I hope the 357 isn't for someone injured.

My rule of thumb is...it's easier to rip/cut a piece of gauze that is to big then it is to increase the size of one to small.

Plan for the worse, expect the best, an all that jazz.

Sirscrapalot - "Man one time, I came across this dude who had a hole in his leg. So I turned to my wife an was like.."Quick babe, give me that extra tampon in your purse, I need to save his life!"

Been there done that racing street bikes in California in a Canyon, forgot all about it until last week at the airport the stand in and hold your arms in the air detector found gravel still in my knee! Had to get the pat down.
Follow up on the accident I got a letter from the attorney and guy who ran stop sign is charged with DUI under influence of alcohol or drugs and refusal. I gave a statement and said Yeah I will testify. Good news is other driver survived.

Oh my gosh, how scary that must have been for you to witness! I do carry a small first aid kit with me with the basics but after reading your thread I'm going to add to it.

I gather all the first aid kits I see in scrap busses and some commercial trucks at the local scrap yard. I carry one my self as well as give them away to friends and family(those willing to help another). The kits are top quality in a water tight metal case that holds up to tools and scrap piling on them or other trunk and behind the seat abuse. I have added a inhaler to mine (with my sons prescription on it) as I know several people with breathing troubles in summer. The Tampon for gunshot wounds idea I like a lot, Will likely find a way to fit a couple in the kit or the glove box. I do check on all accidents a come across if there are no emergency trucks present. With the scraping tools many of us carry in our vehicle much can be done. My fire extinguisher has been used 3 times in the last 20 years. I find them in trucks and busses also,,,
