Finally set up a "new" computer for myself!

I've had the same computer forever. P4 3.0ghz w/ 2 gigs ram, and windows xp for about 8 years. It was always running fine, and it did everything that I needed it to. Sure, I got better computers in all the time, but why not sell them?

Today, I upgraded to a 9 year old IBM workstation. Upgraded to Windows 7, dual 3.8ghz Xeons, 16GB ram, 3 1TB Hard drives in RAID 5 configuration, Two 24" monitors, and extra things that I have collected this year. All of this was from scrap, and including the purchase of win7, cost about $60. This should hold up for a few more years...hopefully.

If anyone has ever considered running dual monitors, do it. I can't believe I haven't done it sooner.

How do you find the use of dual monitors helpful? Mike

    Mike-

It makes multitasking a lot easier. I can have two windows maximized so i dont have to flip between programs.

For example, i have inventory software that i use..i can more easily concurrently update my ebay accounts while using my inventory software.

I can also permanently have SMF open in one window if i want, organize the desktop better, keep my messaging software in view all the time...

Though, maybe i just wanted to watch netflix while I'm workin

lol...Ryan has the right of it, especially the last reason/admission.

When we first moved down here to the sandbar my wife had a gig working as a 'dispatcher' for a computer repair/services company, an I'd get jealous everytime I went to pick her up. 4 giant flat screen's hooked up together. I used to tease one of the tech's that if they came in, in the morning an saw me still sitting there playing my games, to just ignore me.

Just get a video card that supports multiple monitors. I sold an old PCI card on Ebay for less than ten bucks with shipping that had dual monitor support. Our entire company went to dual monitors a few years ago based on studies we did within the company. I love it when comparing quicken to bank accounts when trying to find a missing entry. It's also nice when doing research on one screen and writing a document on the other.
