    Stock Market

Was reading some old threads on investing and was just curious as to whether any of you guys and gals do any investing specific to our industry (or related). There are a few companies I started looking at that are in the scrap metal business and are publicly traded: Sims, Schnitzer, Metalico, Industrial Services of America, etc. I wondered about a "big boy" like Alcoa, too, though they are a little bit removed from the others in terms of focus. Also recycling companies.

Not that I have anything to invest at the moment ..... just curious though. I would think given the uncertainty and fluctuations in global commodity markets that these stocks would be a roller coaster ride. And most of them apparently don't pay dividends ...

the best idea for investing is not in stock if your a scrapper but your own business put that money towards education and proper safety so that you can refine yourselves its like the markets buy low wait and sell high metals always will go up so if your just sitting on money put it to use for you and put yourself to use and flow those rivers of gold

True ... I wonder how many billions (trillions?) have been lost on "sure things" in the market? I have a few shares acquired over the last 30 years, but they are things I feel relatively okay about like Coca Cola, Exxon, and GE. Not enough to really do anything with, but maybe leave to the kids one day. I lost my entire stake in a local bank a few years back when it failed. Again, not a huge amount by some standards, but it was a lot to me.

I just like to read about companies in the scrap metal industry and as a result looked around at ones that were publicly traded.

Agreed that money in hand is probably a better bet than "gambling" on stocks....

I have a small amount invested in Marijuana-related stocks. Basically just curious to see where it goes since legalization is slowly but surely happening. I also buy an ounce of silver from time to time and stash it.

Unless you're willing to take the time to research & educate yourself about investing, micro and macro economics, learn how to read a balance sheet, 10Q, know what a PEG ratio is, what EBITDA/EV means... etc, etc, etc.... You're FAR better off, if you feel the need to invest in US equities... to simply buy shares of SPY. That is a share of basically an exchange-traded mutual fund that invests across the entire S&P500. About 70% of professional mutual fund managers underperform the S&P 500 every year. There's a pretty famous guy in investing circles by the name of Bill Miller. Why's he famous? His Legg-Mason value trust mutual fund beat the S&P 15 years straight. No-one else has ever come close.

Sooo...If you want to try investing/day trading in individual stocks, go ahead & gamble with whatever you can afford to lose & get it out of your system. Then, go find some site like marketocracy.com and try investing with imaginary money until you learn what works & what doesn't. THEN apply what you've learned in the real world.
Out of clutter, find simplicity. --Albert Einstein

To clarify, I wasn't asking for investment advice, I was just curious if anyone extended their scrapping investment / activity to include stocks in such companies. I agree going half a$$ed into anything (including scrapping) is foolhardy.

Interesting approach, Matty, on the marijuana thing. I personally am opposed to legalization, but as you note it appears to be gaining traction on a number of fronts. I actually came across a publicly traded company earlier when I was looking at an unrelated topic that apparently invests somehow in the "industry". With regard to silver (or other precious metals), there is something about having a tangible, physical asset that gives you confidence.

Whether you support legalization or not (I do, but no politics here), if it's an industry that can and will grow, it's definitely worth considering an investment. Like I said, it's a really small amount of money, I just think it'll be fun to see what happens with it.

And I love opening my lock box and seeing some shiny in there. It definitely makes me feel confident.

An hobo, if you're stashing it, you're doing it wrong!

I too invest in the market. I do not do it for long term plays. However there is a uranium company that I am trying to get enough money to buy to make it worth it….it'd be my only long term play. I feel there is a bubble pop coming soon so all these stocks….. recycling companies included, posting record high stock prices will be corrected soon. Alcoa posted record high earnings this year and their stock went up quite a bit.

When stocks are attractive, you buy them. Sure, they can go lower. I've bought stocks at $12 that went to $2, but then they later went to $30. You just don't know when you can find the bottom.
