windows 8.1 on floppy disk challenge

ok so this has been proven a fake even Microsoft addressed this on their website but with all the experts here I wanted to throw out the challenge as Microsoft will indeed make 8.1 for you on floppy if you want to pay for it in the extreme but the challenge really is building a old computer even capable of this. my knowledge in this vast pool cant come up with a way of doing so but its small compared to everyone on here could come up with.
so I would like to challenge everyone here because if you could do this you would be a star overnight lol

I think you should tell us how you really feel FL...

My review would not be suitable for publication anywhere. But I can trim it down and make it decent: "Worst operating system ever."

Basically the old NT kernel with a bunch of useless, annoying crud bolted onto it.

windows 8.1 on floppy disk challenge

I kinda like 8. but that's after I installed classic shell, which got the windows 7 start menu back and got rid of the useless metro screen.

Classic Shell is my friend too. I have a feeling a large % of Win 8 installations are running with Classic Shell. If Microsoft had just let users choose between the dirty-fingerprint Metro interface and a classic Win 7-style interface, they would have saved everyone, including themselves, a lot of grief. I still hate the fact that Win 8 tries to force you to set up a Microsoft account and steer you into using their browser, their search engine, their cloud storage, etc. I log onto my Win 8 machine as a local user to get around that annoyance. I'm also trying a couple of replacements for the File Explorer. Honestly, though, the only reason I use Windows is to run certain software, like Office (the 2007 version), Photoshop, and an old version of MATLAB.

W -- you can get Classic Shell (free!) by going to Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements and downloading it. If you're stuck in Metro hell, this will save you! ;-)

Also, here is a link with instructions on how to switch from a Microsoft account to a local user account: How to switch your Windows 8.1 log-in to a local account - CNET

Just making these two changes will help a lot. You'll also want to turn off those annoying "hot" corners that bring up a Metro submenu every time your mouse gets near them. Here's a video with instructions for that:

    Hope this helps!

Glad to hear you're liking it! Once again, Classic Shell comes to the rescue!

Microsoft should send that developer a great big pile of cash for helping to prevent total loss of its customers to Apple or Linux.

P.S. Wadarbr549, I also had more trouble with Win 8 than with any other OS I've ever used. My data files disappeared one day, and I'm still not sure why. I don't think it was a hardware failure, though. I also did the same thing you did: Just wiped out the entire installation and started over from scratch. But since certain OEMs no longer include the Windows installation disks, even on the hard drive (because of Microsoft's licensing agreement with them), I couldn't even do a clean install. I can only restore the PC to the installation the manufacturer put on it, including all the promotional junk they piled in there. To do my own *legal* custom installation of Win 8, I would have to pay Microsoft for a "retail" version of Win 8. This company has an exceptional gift for making their customers feel unappreciated and abused!

My low point was Windows 8 when I opened a photo in desktop and it opened up in an app. I stared at the screen for 10 minutes asking "how do I close this"???? A good friend of mine at work summed it up rather well: "Microsoft is taking what works and everyone knows, and throwing it away in favor of something that looks pretty." Well that quote was about Office 2007, but it applied equally in this case.

I probably shouldn't, but I'll share this. It pretty much sums up how I feel:

If Apple would sell OS X in a retail version to the public, Windows would be toast and in the history books. Windows is very vulnerable now because they are targeting the cool deadlock generation and not keeping their older customers.
