I am an old fashioned man

My 16 year old daughter and 14 year old son were listing to a song where the guy asked her dad to marry his daughter. They thought that it was crazy to have to ask a father for his daughters hand in marrage. A good song, and you have to ask!

Get use to the idea that respect and manners are crazy. The following will be paraphrased because I do not know his words, just the message:

Our youth have no respect for their elders, societies morals and values, and do not respect themselves. Author, Scarcities in ancient Greece.

Hobo, you may consider yourself old fashion, but your avatar never gets old. HA!

One thing we always insisted on as our kids grew up is that they were home and ready for dinner at 5pm. We always knew they were serious about a new "friend" if they invited them to dinner.

I like this guys response to that song

Certain is it that there is no kind of affection so purely angelic as of a father to a daughter. In love to our wives there is desire; to our sons, ambition; but to our daughters there is something which there are no words to express.

I'm going to agree and disagree on this. First off, I have no children, so I can't empathize.

But being I've been married and divorced, here's my thoughts:

Given each person involved is 18+, technically, they don't "need' permission to date, marry, do whatever; But with this caveat: It sure does make things a lot easier if the guy will sit the woman's father down, talk to him and give him respect in the fact that he's in her life, and will be indfinantly.

On the other hand, I feel like people take things way too out of hand, regarding daughters. They're humans, just like the men are, and have a mind of their own. If they want to do something, etc they will. With or without your consent; (But I'm not saying "Deal with it")

Just saying I think people need to address things as adults, and be respectful to each other... And if that means following someone's traditions, fine. Trust me, it'll put people to ease, vs. being "That punk on a motorcycle"...lol
