I watch a lot of documentaries and what not and can't help but think of all the ships around the world that are waiting to be scrapped. Yeah I know its for the big boys but....
Yea, scrapping them out would be awesome but the amount of gear, men power and the fuel...its a very costly deal. Even more so that the usa and other countries say you can't beach them due to damage to the beaches, wild life so you would need a dry dock for that size ship (again not cheap) that is why countries with poor government do most of the ship brake down...also helps that the labor rate is much cheaper.

there is an old documentary called shipbreakers, you may be able to Google it and find it, it shows them running massive old ships aground in third world countries...then it shows the natives ( women AND children included ) scrapping them out....it is very interesting...they said it was the most dangerous profession that country had, and there were more deaths and injuries doing that than any other job in that area.....
i know i sometimes curse real strict safety men when i am working in power plants, especially if your on nuclear property.....they are very strict and get stricter every year....but when you see a program like the one i mentioned, you are thankful for all the osha, and other rules and regulations we have to protect workers in our country.

Yea I worked on a Nuclear power plant, some of there rules and how slow things moved to get work done to cut the red tape to close this or open that could take days at a time. I was just happy I was paid by the hour an not by the job lmaoOriginally Posted by wadarbr549

Wow... just watched about 20 ship breaking videos on youtube..... Its amazing but its a mess. Theres dozens and dozens of videos on it.

Enjoyed this thread. Dreamed of scrapping a battleship, just a dream. It seems our military scraps equipment in foreign countries because it is cheaper than sending it home. They do not want to leave it for fear it would fall into the wrong hands. Just another dream, creating a company to scrap military equipment. Seems like a good business plan at the moment. Just think an army of scrappers. The next generation.

Driving up I-95 through South Philly, it's hard to miss the Philadelphia Naval Yard on the Delaware river. They have some BIG arse mothballed Navy ships parked there, all peeling paint and rotting away. Not sure what kind of ships they are, all I know is they are big.
There's not a time where I drive by the place and don't think to myself, "That's a lot o' money in scrap right there just rusting away".

Yes sir, I know it well... Work just down the street from it. They had two carriers there but just towed one out about two months ago for scrap. I think the same thing as I drive past it.

I believe the carrier they just towed out recently was the JFK. I wanted to go down and get pics of it before it was taken away but I waited to long.
On a hijack sidenote, my grandfather, a Kansas native, was stationed at the Philly naval yard before the start of WWII. My grandmother lived up in North Philly(in a nice Irish neighborhood which has since devolved into a 3rd world war zone) and would walk to work down in the yard every day. They met, and my grandfather would walk her home the 50+ blocks or so daily. The rest is history.
For all its faults, it's still my favorite city.
