I'm small scale, mostly e-waste. So my most important tools are Wire cutters, a good philips screw driver, my ifixit tool set, my tnt tooling wire stripper, and my hammer.
i would think that No1 would be common sense
thereafter comes everything else
i dont have a shop
i carry a 5lt paint bucket with my most commonly used tools in it.
screwdrivers
pliers
side cutters
hammers
shifting spanners
a hacksaw blade-very useful for scratching the surface coating of any metal- to see what it really is.
Stanley knife
here it is- my pride & joy:

I just recently came up on a forklift.... Man I don't know HOW I worked without one!
I was in the construction business for 35+ years so I have boxes full of tools. About the only ting I don't have is something to cut heavy steel.
Have Fun,
Harold
I hate rules, but I love junk.
I really do not have a shop but I think the most important for me is my computer. I presume, most answers will be exactly the same. For me, this thing is one of the most relevant in every home, office and even in school nowadays. My entire family could not work without it
I don't have a shop but for me it's a flat head driver, a phillips driver, plyers, wire cutters/stripper, and a ronson butane torch.
In order of use. pretty much.
Sidecutters, they can cut things, cut wire, cut to weaken stuff, strip stuff, as a hammer, to remove nuts and screws etc. As a lever.
Phillips screwdriver, for all those phillips screws, and theres millions of them.
Flat bladed screwdriver, for levering stuff apart, and flat slot screws
9 inch angle grinder, for all those things a anglegrinder can do, cutting open compressors and cutting the end off electric motors coils
Copper loppers, like garden loppers, but made for copper tubeing. Best tool I ever found while scrappin
Electric screwdriver, or loose your mind undoing screws.
Adjustable spanner, or 'cresent' as we call them, its a trade name.
Bench vise, its not gonna stay in one place if you hit it hard unless its in a bench vise.
Ear protection, let's you bash stuff harder and concentrate. Also good for use wh ile grinding, same with
Safety glasses
Crowbar, of any sort
Punch, free with every electric motor.
Sacks, probably very important to me as I carry everything in sacks, on my back, home. Then I store my metal in them.
Water, actually orange juice, hydrations important.
And, which I didn't forget. My 7 inch tablet. I get free wifi and that means access to scrapmetalforum each day. A very valuable item and a insight to others scrapping, metal prices and how to ad value to my metal and how to get the most out of it plus all those tips that put me at the top of 'The Game'.

Google first ask questions later!
Seriously, no one has said drill yet??? It was all I wanted when I started...after the third tower and fifth tv I broke down I couldn't do it anymore! Lucky for me it was real close to my b-day and I convinced my wife I needed one for "productivity"
METAL IS MY MISTRESS...PLEASE DON'T TELL MY WIFE!
My truck. Easily.
After that, I do have a shop, so the important tools for me are:
*Desktop Computer (I sell some things online)
*Screwdriver Set
*Radio
*Wire Cutters
But, the most important tool for me in the shop is my hard drive magnets. I never lose tools anymore!
What? My truck won't fit through the door.
Drive thru open all night.
Mine would be my cordless drill.
I came home from work last week and saw this on my table. I picked it up and was checking it out and my Wife informed me that it was hers and that I already had one.
Dang not a single mention of a side grinder and 6" cutting disc?
Couldn't think about scraping without one.
Duct tape & gauze: El cheapo First aid kit.
