This was while he was the owner of Walmart,,,,
I built a very successful truck sales career on this very thing.
Tulsa Oklahoma sirca 70/80 Doengers Brothers Ford:
While other sales man window shopped out the glass front at the slouch hat, muddy boot dirty, overhaul guy on the lot while mumbling He cant buy any thing, me, not knowing any better , went out to talk to them. In just a 3 year period I built the single largest sales record before or since. here is one short story.
20 year old drives old beat up dually on the lot looking at new ones. other sales men "he can't buy any thing" dumb me will waste my time with him. we pick a truck and go in to fill out the finance paper work. He doesn't want to do a credit app no matter how many times I tell him we have to. he keeps trying to hand ma a card. After some time I find out he cant read or write,(that's why he didn't want to do the app) I finally do the app for him. lives in mom and dads house, self employed as firewood cutter and seller. (firewood was not big in OK at the time) income, 6,000 per year. education, 6th grade. oops guess the other guys were probably right this time. take app to finance manager. he looks at it and tells me hes not even going to bother to fax it in. I convince him to bundle it. week goes buy no word, kid comes by and wants his new truck, I have to tell him the bad news. he says ok gives me another card and tells me to call this guy.
THE Guy is a banker. tells me this story, the kids parents were killed in a private plane crash, he inherited their 40+ oil wells. worth many millions. he cuts wood because as a child he was injured and as a result he is a little slow + he likes doing what he is doing. bankers words, give him any thing he wants up to $10,000 (1984 money) any time he wants it and, come get a check.
