So you want to take the Linux plunge. Ubuntu is a good choice but may I suggest Linux Mint instead. It Is the most popular right now because of things that ubuntu won’t give you. Like DVD movie playback and proprietary drivers for some hardware.
Mint is base on Ubuntu ver 14.1 LTS (long term support) so you can run ubuntu programs but Mint is far more user friendly for a newbie.
As far as Windows programs some can run under Wine an windows > Linux interpreter
I would highly suggest to you that you get Windows terms and feel out of your head before you start on Linux. Linux IS NOT Windows.
