    Pop Tab Weights

I've been collecting these for a while now and I'm curious what the weight difference between a normal pop tab, an oversized aluminum tab, a oversized steel tab, the budwiser tabs, monster tabs, and red bull tabs. I'd go weigh these myself but my scale isn't sentative enough to weigh them. Any insight? If there's no difference that's fine because that means I can toss em into the same container.

Count out a 100 or so and then weigh them.

i know the weight of one tab is 0.0104 by googleing however I have not been able t find any info on the other tabs. I have maybe two or three of the others, 1 of the steel tab, and one of the oversized alum tab.

Does your postal scale go to grams?? How many of each does it take to make 5 grams (which is basically the weight of the current U.S. nickel). Then you can extrapolate from there...

Rog, scale does read grams however I only have one steel tab, one oversized aluminum tab, one bud tab, and one red bull tab. About to weigh the monster tabs.

EDIT: 16 monster can tabs make 5g.

I would not mix steel tabs with aluminum ones!

No, I wouldn't either - I'd figure the steel one would have registered on the scale but no go.

Whats with the tabs? Aren't they just aluminum? ie about 50 cents per lb?

so a monster tab weighs 0.313 grams, or 1450 tabs/lb.

What are the units on your regular tab weight of 0.0104?

Not all are aluminum as I've stated, I have one that's steel and I buy that particular food product to get that tab. My questioning was since the monster tabs, bud tabs, and redbull tabs have more aluminum on them, I wanted to know what the difference is. When it comes to some things, it's all about the numbers.

Ok, so I weighed all 83 monster can tabs and they come out at 3oz non-tare. If I devide 3oz by 83, is that my weight per tab? If so, cool - that's one down. That leaves the bud, redbull, and steel tabs to find weights for. TO answer your question yes, a normal can tab weighs 0.0104oz.

Guy I know lets me know every now and then when his numbers increas and he's got 10x as many as I do.
Last time he emailed me his count was 600,000 and he was selling the entire lot for $2,000

I dunno about the village but I'm over in Gavile. Only time I dumpster dove was my brother in law's cousin on his moms side was being evicted and didn't know how to get ahold of me so he relayed the message to him to tell me that he put a bunch of stuff by the dumpster because the landlord wanted the space - walked away with two xboxes, a tv, and a suround system. I was buying whole electronics from a couple of facebook groups but cops in Fulton are getting bad about writing tickets for stupid stuff so I stay away from there. In regards to the tabs, I generally ask people I know for them or buy them off Listia and have never paid cash for em.

For anyone that's curious or was paying attention, I figured out all my weights.

    Aluminum Pop Tab: 0.0104 oz/ea
Aluminum Monster Can Tab: 0.0361 oz/ea
Aluminum Bud Crown/Red Bull Can Tab: 0.018 oz/ea
Over sized Aluminum Tab: 0.0208 oz/ea
Steel Food Can Tab: 0.03 oz/ea

In figuring things out, I weighed all the monster tabs I have which turned out to be 3oz and divided them by the amount I have(83) and came up with 0.0361 oz. I also figured that the punched tabs were half the weight, so I divided 0.0361 by 2 and got 0.018/oz which is just above the weight a normal pop tab of 0.0104 oz. I got my father-in-law and his sister saving all sorts of tabs for me now and this last trip over there I came back with two more steel tabs(I've only been able to locate them on canned cat food and bean less chilli so far) and the three of them weighed in at 0.1oz so I divided that by 3 to get the weight of 0.03 oz. I figured the over sized aluminum tab I have weighs double what a normal tab weighs so I times'd that by two to get 0.0208 oz. These figures may not seem like nothing to some people, but for someone like myself who looks at what possible use an every day object can be used as, this is useful info.

I read this thread and am still left a bit confused. What are you doing with the tabs??? Selling as scrap?? If so the container on which it came from has to be worth 3-4x as much...

You stated the guy you know has 600,000 tabs and is selling for 2,000. That's .003 a tab... you need 3 of em just for a stinkin penny!

    Am I missing something here?
