600K tabs for 2 grand is better than scrap price.

A tab weighs .0104 oz, according to Logan.

    times 600,000 divided by 16 oz/lb gives 390lbs.

2000$ divided by 390 lbs is $5.13/lb. compared to scrap aluminum at 50 cents per lb. +/-

What I want to know is who is crazy enough to pay 5 bucks per lb for aluminum scrap!! Or what it is used for!! That many tabs will make a LOT of crafty stuff!! Ebay 600 lots of a thousand tabs for 5 bucks each?

    Jon.

Yes because I deal in stats and numbers all the time. It's how I know the precision of everything.

If you look back through the thread, the tabs will eventually be sold. The guy didn't price them out that way - he priced them based on what it would cost to ship that many tabs to anyone. When you're dealing with an arts and crafts object such as tabs, you're in a different set not matter what the material is.

That's just it - when you're dealing with an arts and crats object some will fight to get it no matter what the source material is. If in the end I save up alot or even sell enough scrap to get this guys 600k tabs, collect some more, and sell the whole thing on ebay I could end up cashing out like a bandit. Won't know till it happens.

Just imagine for a moment an LTL of can tabs :P

    Thanks hobo for sharing!!

I think how it all got started was that pop tabs was easy, "clean" recycling that long-lasting charities or whatever could do. No mess with drink residue, not a lot of bulk (or not a lot of wasted space at the buyer or in transport), and it didn't matter if it took a month or 6 months to fill a collection box because the folks/groups getting the money were generally always going to be around. My main non-ferrous guy used to offer a couple of cents more for pop tabs per pound. I just checked and tabs are about a third lower than straight cans.

But then the "myth" got started that pop tabs were worth a lot more than regular cans because maybe a few cases someone gave a break for charities (and wrote it off on their taxes) and everyone expected pop tabs to be high end value. Sure, then there's perhaps the crafters willing to pay a little more (and then may not) and so the pop tab craze got going. Maybe with Alum sort of taking a dump as well, the pop tab craze will be over.

    But then myths die hard...
