I need to buy a dump truck. Sources?

I'm trying to buy a dump truck without spending a ton of money, and I am looking for ideas. I want the type of truck that 800-got-junk uses, short box but high sides. Not finding any on CL. I am finding some that have short sides but I am not interested in building the sides myself.

I am looking at auction sites but not much there. Dealerships by me don't seem to have anything.

    Thoughts?

Check out farm grain trucks. Most in my experience don't get a lot of miles but are not what I would call a dump truck but do have a dump bed. Mike

I've found if you're not in a hurry, you'll run across one for a good price if you keep an eye out. Last week, there was a bankruptcy auction here for a landscaping business. There were 5 or 6 assorted dumps like you would want. Also, why not look into converting a regular truck into a dump? Maybe you can find a good deal on a truck and a bed, but not one put together yet.

Check out the state and county auctions for trucks that they have taken out of service. Some of them go cheap.

I'd go with a dump trailer. But that's just me, I like dump trailers.

I have always been impressed with the trucks the tire shops use --- not sure if they dump but the cages on them bad boys I LIKE

I would skip on a farm truck, unless you can really go through it. Do you have a CDL? A lot of the farm grain/beet trucks are tandem axle, so you'll need a CDL-B. Some are side dumping- that may not make a difference for you, though.

We borrowed a Ford 7000 for grain one year. It was a 1978 model, and had 43k original miles. It was a clapped out piece of junk, though. Out here, the beet trucks are notoriously overloaded and put away wet. The tandem axle ones get really abused out here.

One year I drove a grain truck that was under CDL. There was basically no floor to the right of the shifter. I got unnerved at seeing the highway, so I put a piece of plywood over it.

Maybe they're better-kept by you, but out here, those trucks are used up.

Look into construction auctions (Especially if you have a CDL-B), and check into your state's surplus auctions.

Municipal/road crew trucks can sometimes be had for a good price, but... Just like farm trucks, check them over very carefully, especially up here in the North. By the time they're ten years old, our road crew trucks here are usually in pretty awful shape. Always low mileage, but they're hard miles with a lot of idling, snow plowing and stop-and-go driving...And rusted to h#ll underneath. Some employees who drive a work-owned truck will treat it like their own. Unfortunately, many others don't. The sooner they wear it out, the sooner they'll get a new one to drive- That's how they see it.

"Sealed bid" municipal auctions can sometimes bring a very good score. Several years ago, a town near me put a retired police cruiser out for sealed bid. Nothing wrong with it, a good-running older Chevy Caprice. It got one bid of $50. Rather than junk it or reject the bid and go through the whole process again, the town council said "Sold!". Often, they just want rid of these unused vehicles. The sealed bid process satisfies the legal requirement for disposition of them, but often does not attract the competition that live bidding would, and they will often accept the high (or only) bid even if it's dirt cheap.

Would a few extra sideboards do what you want?

Looks like this one worked out for both of us. Just sold it. Started it the other day with the buyer and it blew grey smoke and all hydraulics worked. Selling items for more than scrap value is what it is all about. Good luck.

Can't complain! It'll be used, and that helps everyone.
