My thought is that found cash is just that. I would keep it to see if anyone reported it lost and return it. If someone knew about it, that would tell me it was theirs. I have tried an experiment and asked "hey, anyone lose a hundred dollars?" I always get a couple people who will say 'yeah." If I found it where there was a good possibility I knew where it came from (under a cash register, next to someones locker, near a colleagues desk) I would return it or ask them if they were missing any money.

To me it looks like the managers stole it from you because to them, it was found cash. You are more honorable than they are.
