What would you do if you $100 bill at work? Turn it in or keep it? I...

I found a $100 bill crumpled up at my work place, so I did what I thought was right and immediately turned it to a manager. Unfortunately I work in retail and I am treated like a snot-nosed teen and was reminded that was the proper thing to do and if I pocketed it that would be "stealing". Anyways, management said if no one claimed it 30 days then it would be mine. Awesome! 45 days later. Lost prevention manager said there is a new rule and the money just will be automatically deposited into the corporate account. gee whizz, wally!

I told the manager if I see money again I am not wasting my time picking it up or if its near a customer, its their lucky day. WTF!

    So, what would you do?

How about found money gets deposited into an account for charity or for the next employee picnic or something like that? Corp account?! I think it would be better as you said to let it go to the "lucky" customer.

Any loose cash I found outside of a building (public place) is mine unless it is a large amount of money then I would wait to see if anyone reported it lost or stolen. Anyone can claim cash as theirs and most likely if you turn it in they will just pocket it themselves. IF I found a wallet with cash or something with it that could identify the owner they would get it back.

Rolly, if I were you, I would check with your boss's boss and the police. His boss to see where the money actually went (very suspicious) and the police because if you found it and no one claimed it, it legally becomes yours after a certain period. Here it's 6 months or a year, I'm not sure. Who knows, maybe you get the guy fired for "stealing" himself!

All the managers were aware that I found it. They might just of stuck it their pocket but there too many people involved to do so. Theft is really high right now, so there are a ton of checks & balances for everything and everyone.

I also work retail. In my case all unclaimed items / money become property of the store if not retrieved. Were you working at the time? If so you were "representing" the store and items found by you were actually found by the store. Not saying it's right, just the way it is.

For you guys in retail, how many times does a person report lost money and they say, oh yes someone just turned it in! Here you go! Have a great day and come back!

You have to live with yourself for whatever decision you make. Your idea of giving it to the closest person over the corporation is a great idea. This is an example of a persons character vaulting themselves to the next level. It was on Paul Harvey, yes I am that old. A manager of a fast food restaurant saw a legally blind regular patron drop a $ 20 bill on the ground when paying for merchandise. The lady behind him picked it up and put it in her purse. The lady was confronted by the manager when she went to pay for her goods. She denied it and wrote a letter to the owner for being falsely accused. She did not know it but the manager took $ 20.00 out of his pocket and returned it to the regular customer. The regular customer wrote a letter to the owner as well promoting the honesty of an employee assuming he had just returned his original money. Several others witnessed the act and somehow it was reported to the media. End result, free advertising for Dairy Queen, a promotion for the manager, and finally something positive on the news. Life is like a boom a rang, what goes around, comes around.

I've seen and heard of two situations for money to be laying around. The first is as bait for potentially dishonest employees. An example I was told of is coin channels in vending machines being plugged up to try to catch servicing personnel stealing. The second situation is one I see all the time. I often work in customers homes while they're off to work or running errands. It's not unusual for me to see cash laying on a countertop on the first day a job. I've never discussed it with customers, but I'm sure it's a test of my honesty.

My thought is that found cash is just that. I would keep it to see if anyone reported it lost and return it. If someone knew about it, that would tell me it was theirs. I have tried an experiment and asked "hey, anyone lose a hundred dollars?" I always get a couple people who will say 'yeah." If I found it where there was a good possibility I knew where it came from (under a cash register, next to someones locker, near a colleagues desk) I would return it or ask them if they were missing any money.

To me it looks like the managers stole it from you because to them, it was found cash. You are more honorable than they are.

I would look into that corporate policy and see if it holds water. Not without jeopardizing your job though. Keep it low and easy.

I think you did right, they just aren't doing right by you. If you were told the policy is 30 days, then they should stick to it even if there is a new policy.

I once found a bank bag on the side of the road with over $500 in it.....plus the owner's social security check. Funny that I was on a sprayer and couldn't stop in the road to pick it up. It even had dollar bills hanging out of it, but traffic was fast and kept on speeding by. I had to spray the field, go back to my truck and come back to check again. It was still there. When I returned it to the owner of the gas station it came from, he said thanks. I was about to leave when he asked if there was any change lying around. He kept it in a jar in the bag after emptying the register and had a 1800s silver dollar that he had for years. It had been what busted the seams on the bag when it fell off the roof of his car. I went back to the spot, and sure enough, along with some other change, there was the silver dollar still on the side of the road. When I returned it, he was overjoyed and gave me a $20 reward. That sentimental silver dollar was worth more than the $500 to him.

If I can find the owner or it's in a place that they might come back looking, I always return money. If it's just out in public, it's impossible to find who dropped it. I'm happy to say that just yesterday, I pulled out my credit card at a gas pump and the lady behind me honked and pointed at the $5 and $10 bills that had fallen out. Maybe the world isn't ending this week after all.

Usually its a big game of life . If you find cash and take it , in time it will be you , So you can't be pissed cause it's your turn .
Your turn can be many things , car problems , tickets , bounce checks. your turn is your loss causing another to gain.
If you want keep it but remember it's just a loan.

My wife seems to find money (that's why I like to keep her around). She will usually give only her phone number to the manager or clerk in the immediate vicinity with the condition that if someone asks about lost money, to call her and tell her the amount that was lost and she would gladly return it to that person.

No one has ever called. Once a clerk insisted that she tell her the amount that was found so she could "help" find the customer that lost the money.

I've posted this before, but I saw a young man running from a gas station, get into a vehicle and leave the scene. When i approached the door, I saw a number of items laying on the ground. It included his driver's license and credit card. He was a hunter from out of state and I had no idea where the vehicle went. I asked at the counter if the clerk knew him, but NO. I tried to find the vehicle around the small town, but NO. I left the items with the clerk in hopes he would return to ask, but NO, so the next day I asked for them back. Thanks to the internet, I googled his name and address and fortunately he had a landscaping business that listed his cell phone number. I called it and he was still in the area and very glad to get them back. He was leaving that day to return and thought they were gone forever. It makes me feel good. I just always hope that I'm the one that finds stuff like that instead of someone who will abuse the situation.

like I told people at the place with out a name were I worked and owners and I had the same policy. finders keepers. I had people complain all the time about money missing from there lost wallet and just like the police told them it was lost property on their property by law and they are not responsible for their property. only guns drugs and bombs should be turned in to the police anything else is a waste of their time because the dmv handles your id and you credit cards are your responsibility to cancel and lost to you.
now lost cash is one thing I mean that's just sitting on the floor already out. like I told people wallets are meant to be in front pockets because back pockets are build for your hands and for purses I mean that's just silly you deserve not to have it if something that big you cant remember like an umbrella. you only learn when there is consequences for your actions is another tag like I used often when I found a phone and took their battery but gave the phone back the thing that somehow we all cant live without but somehow you can forget anyway the way I do things are based of living in the real world and the continuation of the decline of the human race

Went on a little walk at break today and found a 10 blown up against a fence! Score! I love the spring thaw/melt! I should point out that I work in an industrial area and it was very windy. Still asked around my work but I'm not going door to door to other businesses for $10.
