Windows 10

looks great BUT be aware it does not transfer every thing automaticly. and will transfer some stuff that will slow your computer way down.

I've lost my Yahoo favorites, have three programs running in the back ground I can't find, I have lost craigs list, Bing search all it did, lost my TV programing, etc. never thought I would ever miss windows 81.

Plus, the privacy settings are atrocious. For anyone who takes the upgrade now, I'd strongly recommend to both back up all of your data beforehand, and to review all of the privacy settings after install.

Just finished upgrading one of my machines this morning. What i thought i would do is start simple.

I did a clean install of (Microsoft OEM) win 7 pro 64bit onto a new solid state drive a couple of days ago then updated it accordingly. With it being pure Microsoft software it would give the upgrade to Windows 10 every chance in the world to go smoothly.

The upgrade went off without a hitch. If i remember right .... there was an option to keep or discard your present operating system's settings ? That might have been the problem ?

From what i've seen in the past you generally run into problems when you try to upgrade an OS that's been in use for awhile. You're almost better off to do a clean install of some kind then add your apps & files later.

ETA: The privacy settings are a concern. The privacy settings are another option that you have to go through carefully during setup. I went back and verified that they held after the install and they held okay.

Still ... it's unsettling to go to a new OS. I had to paw through it for an hour and a half to familiarize myself with where they had relocated everything important.

Windows 6.1???

I up graded this laptop that was Win 8.1 to Win 10. So far its better and more intuitive than Win 8 was. Because I found Win 8 not to my liking I chose to up grade this computer first.

I will try to make this short. I sell some computer related stuff on ebay. I had a sale that needed shipping and ran into problems printing the shipping label.

(This was on one of my Win 7 computers) Weird stuff was happening, all three web browsers kept crashing.

I changed to another Win 7 computer and continued to not be able to print. (plugged and unplugged printer several times)

This went on for quite a while so I got this laptop with Win 10 and hooked it to the printer. Again no print, second try, no print , then Win 10 told me it suspected a problem with the print and asked if it was ok to go ahead and try to fix it. I said yes and it fixed the printer problem.

The printer was working on all the computers that it didn't work on before and the browsers stopped crashing. No idea why it had that problem but I had been having intermittent problems with browsers crashing but only on the computers that were connected to the printer.

I am happy with Win 10 so far but will put off upgrading the win 7 computers for now. Mike

Been messing around computers for 30 years (my first was a commodore 64 when they were not considered vintage)......I am actually impressed with 10 and as far as the security features go just turn off Cortona or whatever its called and there is alot of your problems solved right there.......I do wish the control panel was a little easier to find

Microsoft..funny even when they don't know it! .

I think it was intentional. There's this whole thing with developing AI's (artificial intelligences) that do the tasks that a personal assistant (secretary) would do. Microsoft did a ton of market research to come up with something that people felt comfortable with and could relate to. The crew from Halo was part of the team tasked with giving the Cortana AI a personality.

It ties in with what Matador was saying about privacy settings being atrocious. A lot of personal information has to be sent back to the AI so that it can learn your patterns and do a better job of serving your own particular needs. It's a work in progress, but with enough information it's likely to know what you'll be doing months and maybe even years in advance just like your own secretary would.
