I didn't copy it. That would be too much effort. I just used Google

Oh, yeah: Linux FTW! I wsh Microsoft would use packages the way Linux does. Don't like the GUI? Install another one....

It's shifting gears a bit, but i was reading somewhere that the aim is to have close to a billion devices upgraded to Win 10 over the next year or two ?

Is there any speculation on what Microsoft's endgame is ? Obviously, it serves their best interest to offer the upgrade for free and get as many previous versions of their OS out of service as possible. I wonder how they benefit.

    Just idle speculation but it:

    1: Crowds out their competition.

2: More people are using the cloud as a daily backup for their small devices. It appears that Microsoft is offering cloud storage for a fee ?

3: The Cortana artificial intelligence gathers a lot of personal data. The more she gathers the more she will grow & evolve.

4: It's tinfoil hat stuff but we do live in the information age. Could all of this metadata be sold to governments & large corporations so as to better manage societies ?

    Any thoughts ?

I think a lot of it has to do with the fiasco that was Windows 8. After that and Vista, I think they'd just love to bury both in the past, and get everybody on one product.

Making bug fixes for all the currently supported desktop Operating Systems (Vista, 7, 8.1, 10) isn't cheap, either. If they can get everyone on the same thing, designing fixes becomes simpler.

I can see how it really would simplify things and lower their operating costs but they always made their money selling a new version of an operating system every few years. You know ... add a few bells, whistles, and shiny baubles. Folks love that kind of thing.

If they're not doing that anymore then how are they going to make their money ?

It doesn't quite add up for me.

Bingo...it is call in "app" or in this case OS purchases. We do it with apps now and the apps themselves. Plus it will resolidify them as #1 in the OS market...since windows 8...yeah that POS. It is all about getting back into the defacto leadership position. THEN THEN, it will be a subscription service to keep windows updated to the latest and greatest...watch. Adobe already suckered people into it (I told them to F off, but I don't believe in renting software.

I should be doing a fresh install of Win 10 on my laptop in the next week or so....I say fresh install because upgrades on OS's SUCK....you have ot start fresh to get it right really.

When Windows 8 came out, the base version couldn't natively play a DVD- you had to upgrade to the Pro version to do that. Of course, you could just install VLC Media Player for free, and be going in about 5 minutes, but...

There was also "Windows 8.1 with Bing". This was an operating system that was given to OEMs (Such as Dell, Gateway, HP, and Asus) for free. It was Windows 8.1, but the serach settings were all defaulted to Bing. The end user could change it to whatever they want, but still....

The 8.1 with Bing OS was only offered on low-end machines- it was a way to get people into new laptops. They aren't very good laptops, but they're still a new laptop- and they're cheap.

That makes me wonder about search marketing- why else would they give away 8.1- even a stripped down version- to OEMs?

they were trying desperately to buy market share in the search market. Google STILL eats their lunch.

OH, Win 10...default browser is he EDGE (read reworked Internet Explorer) browser....keep in mind it is a bit of gymnastics to make it install and use another browser....here's a hint, YOU CANNOT do express install...don't do it...do custom install. Oh there are about 12 different privacy setting to make sure you change as well...but hey that is life these days...ALL companies want ALL the info they can get on you in order to sell it or sell advertising.

Do a couple of searches before upgrading and follow their suggestions (the things I mentioned above)

    Interesting fun fact
If you set your screen saver to auto rotate your pictures windows 10 will pull any and all pics stored on your computer, even in sub folders and hidden files...

    Thanks guys.

I was totally puzzled by Microsoft. It makes more sense now.

Didn't spend any more time with win 8 or 8.1 than i had to because i didn't like the GUI. It's like what the heck is a large icon for the Microsoft store and all this other useless stuff doing in my way ? Where the heck is the desktop and the start button ? That Bing bong thing stinks. How the devil do i make Google my homepage ?

Cortana ....nah ....no thanks. I don't need a secretary. I work for a living. The last thing i need is my computer talking back to me. That's my wife's job !

Ummmm ... Win 10 is gonna take some getting used to.

Maybe i'm just getting old and set in my ways.

That's why I use Linux. It can be cutting edge, or as dated as I am!

Classic Shell really improves the usability on 8 and 8.1 It may be something to try on 10. Basically, it takes the 8 out of 8, leaving you with 7.

Definitely should look into Linux but I had a little time to spend with 10 last night and it's not all that bad. I'm running a seven year old Dell with 8gb pc-2 6400. 3 ghz AM 2 dual core. Recently upgraded to an 80 gb solid state drive.

The machine snaps from one task to the next pretty quickly. Near as I can tell, upgrading it to ten might have sped it up a bit. The web browser seems to be faster than Firefox.

I customized the desktop to a simple one color background & removed all of the icons that I know I won't use. It's not all that different from win 7 or XP.

The jury is still out, but I did run into a few features that seem to be a definite improvement over all of the other previous versions of windows I've used.

Hummm ..... maybe it doesn't suck.

I've been using Windows 10 upgrade on this laptop since 30 July. This is/was a Windows 8 machine, ASUS with i5 and I installed a SSD hard drive when I got it
    (scrap).

This is a causal machine that I read email, read the forums, complete ebay listing etc. So no serious business or gaming on this machine. On my other computers I run Windows 7 and Ubuntu, both of which I like very much. In fact I think I could change over to just Ubuntu and not really miss Windows at at all.

I really did not like Windows 8 and since the upgrade I do prefer Windows 10 and find it more easily navigated. If you find yourself lost go to the Windows symbol in the lower left corner of the screen, RIGHT CLICK it. What pops up will remind you of Windows 7.

Windows 10 is app driven and since I have owned an Iphone for several years I don't find it too difficult to deal with.

Someone mentioned the lack of a media player. Well microsolft seems eager to sell you an app for that. Perhaps this is where Microsoft is going to make money giving away striped down OS and selling the apps needed to make things work.

Hopefully others have more info to share. 73 Mike

Well I think its time to bring up the Windows upgrade discussion now. The free upgrade to Windows 10 is scheduled to end the 29th of this month.

I have upgraded my other two "work" computers to windows 10 and those are dual boot with ubuntu 14.04. For those who doubt if its a good idea to upgrade I think it is because of the security updates that will continue with windows 10.

One thing I like about win10 way more thatn win 8 and win 8.1 it this: The lower left corner where you would find the "start" button there is a "window" icon. Left click and you get the the app type stuff, right click and you get a more plain jane menu.

Still in doubt go to a best buy, sams club any retailer that has operating laptops out where you can try them out and get an idea how it works.

I would just hate to see any of you miss out.

I just finished upgrading my neighbors from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1(WHAT A PAIN)(8.1 is a free upgrade for 8.0 only) and finally to Windows 10 which was much easier. 73, Mike

There are plenty of folks using 3.0(up) but not online. So if its not broke don't fix it. My real concern is for those who have computers with Windows 7,8 and 8.1 who can upgrade for free to windows 10.

I'm not saying I love Windows 10 or any of the other windows editions but 10 will have continued support. I upgrade my Ubuntu when new LTS(Long Term Support) editions come out. I'm not the first one to jump on to windows new editions but the end of the free up grade for Windows 10 is 29 July 2016.
