For those of you who are thinking of switching to Linux after extended support for Windows 7 ends, think again. True, there are usually programs you can install on a Linux OS to replace your Windows programs but there's a learning curve involved. It might be best to first install Windows 10, then install a Linux OS for a dual boot.

Actually they may not have other packages like but there are 3rd party options availible. You can drop it to strictly text or a complete gui type of file manager.I didn't copy it. That would be too much effort. I just used Google
Oh, yeah: Linux FTW! I wsh Microsoft would use packages the way Linux does. Don't like the GUI? Install another one....

With a bit of effort you can replace all the Microsoft crap while remaining on "windows" base coding.

I tried the upgrade and hated it. I went back to Win 7. It slowed everything down so bad that I couldn't play simple games online. I'm only running a laptop with an i5 processor and 4G RAM. I heard others complaining of the same issues.
I hate the thought of upgrading again for that reason, but also don't want to miss the deadline. Any thoughts?:

Folks tend to load up with a lot of unnecessary apps & programs that they don't use. Manufacturer bloatware adds a lot of redundant features. The later windows versions always seem to fart around and do something else when you're in a rush. These things hog up system resources and slow the machine down.
I've found the Microsoft OEM version of win 10 to work pretty well. I just don't like the GUI.

I loaded Ubuntu on my spare laptop a few months ago. It was one of the easiest installs I've ever done. Everything worked right from the get go, including the WiFi.
I have a bit more computer experience than some folks, but I'll say it's pretty easy to get used to.
If a person can make the switch from a desktop computer to a smartphone, they probably won't have any problems with Ubuntu.

I have say at 63yrs old I find your statement to be true for me. I would include Windows 10 in that as well.
I would use Ubuntu or another Linux OS if they would do work with every program that the current version of Windows does. There is few reasons for me to use windows but there are a couple. Mike

90% of the junk I use now, can not be "replaced" on a Linux system. Sure there are "similar" programs, but nothing that is as reliable or bug free as what I have now.

I never liked Windows 8 and 10. I still use 7.
I am wondering what you are going to do once the lack of security up dates take their toll?
I tried to update/fix a neighbor's Windows Vista laptop. It used to be an easy deal but this time it was such a pain that I gave up. I got a bad virus and just wiped the hard drive. Instead of again re-installing Vista I installed Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit operating system. That made the laptop a good working machine again.
Of course its up to the individual but once Microsoft stops with security updates you can face similar problems that I did with Vista. 73, Mike

I just finished up what was originally a Vista gaming machine that had been upgraded to win 7. Truth be told .... it was a bit of a booger to upgrade it to win 10. Finally figured out that win 10 wouldn't play well with the video card that was installed. Pulled that, and the problem was solved.
It ran well on win 7 but now that it's finished it seems to run faster on win 10.
I can tell you if you want to waste a lot of time and want to bang your head on something hard, HAVE THE WRONG DATE AND TIME on your computer. Microsoft give some long number error code and no direct fix for the "problem". Finally I noticed the date/time were way off(by years), changed it and everything worked great.
Microsoft could really improve the error code stuff. 73, Mike

I can relate. Got an undefined error code. Well .... that's helpful.
I've tried the upgrade from the little window icon down on the right hand side and that's failed twice on two different machines. It's a complete waste of time to go through the whole download only to have it fail time and again.
I found something that does seem to work smoothly though ......
Make sure that you're running an ethernet cable directly to your modem.
Just use a standard wired keyboard & mouse.
Use a standard monitor.
Temporarily pull and video cards.
Disconnect any usb devices like external hard drives and so on.
Next, use the media creation tool to create a usb thumb drive. After it's done being made, plug it into your machine and proceed to windows 10 setup. Do a completely new install. Don't to try bringing your files & apps forward into win 10.
This seems to work if you dumb the machine down enough.

i have a dual boot system- Core2Dou 2.4Ghz on a 775 Intel Board.
one with XP & the other has Win 7
i have turned off auto updates and i dont install lots of new software.
my system is fast enough & i dont have any problems with viruses, malware etc
im happy with it as it is & i have NO plans to change/upgrade my OS.

With all this talk especially about Windows becoming a subscription service (Monthly Charges may apply) I have made the move to download Ubuntu/Linux............I will check it out and am going to start offering DUAL BOOT Machines Windows 7/Linux...........Doubt it will make much difference to my customers

IDK ... with the deadline looming it seemed like a good idea to get my machines upgraded. Not something i really wanted to do, but supposedly win 10 is likely to be the OS that all windows machines will be running in a few years. Running into problems with the upgrade on every machine.
Honestly, if you're happy with the OS that you're running right now, you'll be better off to stay with what you've got.

I didn't upgrade to Windows 10. I'll hang on to my Windows 8.1 for as long as I can.

MS monthly subscription fees could be good news for us Linux users, this will encourge develpers to make more apps for Linux, I was origanlly a Linux Red Hat user then when they went with their IPO and brought out Fedora abandoned it in favour of Ubuntu.
Missus wants a gaming computer, if those games she wants have been ported over to Mac then this is what she'll get.
