If we stopped financing ca.s stupid euphoric perfect world laws, (there is and never will be) they may stop this stupid crap.

I've mentioned this before., My brother in law(now a retired blue collar millionaire) was a Union electrician in CA. rose what ever they call a job supervisor ($58per hr) problem is any job he was on they paid for 2 supervisors because he could never handle a job site on his own. I'm not trying to hijack the thread just tired of politicians like the ones who ran Ca. in the ground from doing it to the rest of us.
"anyone who thinks scrappin is easy money ain't doin it right!"

This thread about the price of eggs, it is also as much about politics, as it is about the price of eggs at the grocery store. I wish it wasn't so. Politicians seem to be at the root cause's of a lot our problems. Politicians everywhere are about the same, all have their "hidden agendas". California stands out, we have a lot more of them, then most states, with just more "hidden agendas". A lot of players in this "egg game" inside and outside the boarders of California.

Egg producers from the states of: Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, and Iowa. All collectively spent millions working with the Humane Society of America (main sponsor) to pass Prop 2. They seemed to be very concerned in 2008 about the size of cages for egg laying hens in California. Now that they got their law passed, but California legislator says the law includes their cage sizes too, if they want to sell eggs in California. They wanted bigger cages here, but their chickens don't need bigger cages and more room. Politicians and lawyers from those states spending a lot of time in California's court rooms these days.

Their Mom's should have told them: Be careful of what you wish for! There's going to be a lot of rotten eggs, when this comes out into the open. A lot of people going to have "Eggs on their Faces".

The Humane Society of the United States.

Is not a California organization, Their main office is in Washington D.C They are not done with their influence and manipulation of California's egg industry. In 2008 they wanted larger cages for egg laying hens, that is what they got. Seems that still wasn't good enough. In 2014 they started their "cage free" campaign. In a statement released by the HSUS in first part of last year:
The HSUS continues to maintain there is no question that cage-free systems are consistent with the standards required under Proposition 2 and urges the U.S. Congress to pass comprehensive legislation for the housing of laying hens. If California egg producers want to meet a lower standard than Prop 2, the U.S. Congress must pass comprehensive national legislation for the housing of laying hens.

The HSUS wants all egg producers to go "Cage Free". The egg companies from outside of California, that spent millions of dollars in California, working with HSUS to influence and change laws in California, Should be careful on "Who they get in bed with!"

I just want to add, [I] loved Ca. back in the 60,70.and early 80s. in my opinion of what you get when politicians try to apply their own brand of "improvements" to paradise. " California+politicians today= America tomorrow " mcw circa 2001

Back when we had the show, part of our circuit was around D.C . We had signs all over each ride or game explaining rules and safety. sometime in the 90,s we added Spanish language signs. Around D.C.it seemed no one could read either. I did an off the cuff survey and found I was in Olympic village in the middle of Bangladesh, Botswillastan or somewhere. There were at least 7 different prominent languages spoken and read. It seems no one took time to learn any American (English) (I thought that was a requirement to becoming a citizen.) It is no wounder and another fact in the enforcement of "term limits" how can any one who spends decades in this environment have a picture of what America really is or should be. mcw IT'S JUST COMMON SENSE!

Can you tell I don't like any part of the "Egg Law" or California's Prop. 2 Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act of 2008. I first started researching it way back in the start of 2008. The first thing that got my attention was the sponsor of this Proposition was The Humane Society of The United States. When I think of Humane Society, I think "Dogs and Cats", these folks want people to take good care of their pets, I'm OK with that. So why was the HSUS now so concerned about Farm Animals? Isn't there enough pets for them to worry about? Farm animals should be a concern of "Farmers Groups, Health Professionals, Agriculture Inspectors, Consumer Protection Groups", a lot of people before the Humane Society.

My other concern was the local, regional, state and national economies, 2008 was a really bad year for a lot of us. This proposition was a "No Brainer", it was going to raise prices at the grocery store. People were already having a hard time putting food on our tables. Families were loosing their homes and the HSUS was thinking about where the chickens live!

My third concern was "Do we really need more laws?", I thought then as I do now, We have enough laws! I have for sometime been of the opinion, too many laws, just enforce the one's already on the books. This proposed animal rights law was not needed to start with. I could not figure out how it could be enforced, The proposition originally called for all farm animals, to be able to move, stand up, lie down, turn around and in short farm animals needed more space. As the proposition progressed and onto the ballot, it had become about egg laying hens, being able to "spread their wings".

Now in 2015, I know a lot more about the "egg law" then I did in 2008. All of my concerns in 2008, are now reality in 2015.
My thinking about who's going to enforce it? Because the Humane Society of the United States wrote the law, it will be the dog catcher's of California. Farmers could face fines and possibly face jail sentences if they don't give their hens enough space. The law makes it a misdemeanor crime against animals, because of that, not the Department of Agriculture's jurisdiction. So will the dog catcher be using his/her tape measure to verify if a chicken has enough space?

The Humane Society of the United States got their egg law passed in California. What state is next? They will be coming to all of them, watch and see.

The Humane Society of the US (not to be confused with your local humane society although I have issues with them as well) is one step up from PETA. The Humane Society US would love to outlaw all hunting in the country as well. I was in DC one spring attending a big conference and was working through the titles of all the talks in a book-sized program so I had one of the national big cable news channels on in the background. In the space of about 3 hours I literally listened to 20 of their tv ads. I was about ready to puke at the end, so sick of listening to Sara McLaughlin (sp?) talking and singing about them.

A number of years ago they came in to se SD on a big "puppy mill" raid, helping out a "second chance" shelter that had wrestled away the Sioux Falls contract with the local Humane Society in dealing with stray dogs and cats. The director of this shelter also was the animal control officer for a couple of nearby more rural counties and she used that authority, with HUofUS muscle, to conduct this raid.

Well, it was big news and the guy should have been taking better care of his dogs and puppies but when it went to court several times he basically found innocent and then he sued the second chance shelter who also was feeding all these confiscated animals. Fast forward a year or so and the second chance shelter was bankrupt and the director had been fired by the board before it folded. The the Humane Society of the US was long, long gone.

P.S. I recognized a couple of photos in the the HSoftUS /Sara McLaughlin cry fest of ads from the se SD puppy mill raid...

Looks to me like the HS has a common problem that infects most "governmental Bureaucracies" too much time and tax dollars on their hands.

The Humane Society of the United States is a private organization started in 1954. They certainly know how to influence governments through campaign contributions of politicians sympathetic to their causes.

Concerning the California egg law, that I believe is HSUS goal to be a national law. I copied this from their home page.
    Legislation

We've helped pass 10 state laws banning extreme confinement and other factory farming practices. In 2008, The HSUS was the primary sponsor of California’s Proposition 2, a ballot initiative requiring that the state’s producers to phase out battery cages and gestation and veal crates. It passed with 63.5 percent of the vote. Two years later, California legislators passed an HSUS-spearheaded measure requiring that all shelled (whole) eggs sold statewide—regardless of where they originate—be produced in compliance with Prop 2.

the more and more I look around on this forum, the more glad I am that I found it and joined. Never did I think when I joined that I would find a post about chicken eggs, but I have to say this is great. im not a chicken lover, but I love chicken and eggs lol. my wife has 20 hens and 2 roosters and we get the eggs and they are great. local prices right now are just under 4 bucks a dozen. all I know is feed is 15 bucks for 50 pounds but I don't know how fast she burns through it, and she also usually has 5-10 chickens that are just for meat at any time. but its funny y'all are talking about egg color, we only have one foghorn leghorn that lays white eggs. then a bunch of them lay brown, but she has a breed called Americana and some lay blue eggs and some lay green, its hilarious. all I can think of is dr suess when she comes in with them.

My bro & SiL have mostly brown eggs with some just off-white towards brown. They haven't planned very well this year. The laying cycle with their birds have been typically 4 months from chicks to pullets just starting to lay and then cranking out eggs very solid for 2+ years before the hen starts to decline in production. When their flock is hitting on all cylinders, they should be getting about 80% out of the total number of hens so if you have 2 dozen than about 18-20 eggs a day. But they didn't plan on their medium-old hens now getting a year older so they still have about 2 doz hens eating the same amount of corn but are only laying about 9-11 eggs a day since sometime this summer. He doesn't want to get chicks again this fall and had looked into buying fully laying hens mail-order but they were spendy!! I went through all the local CL "farm & garden" listings (about 2,500 entries) about 2-3 weeks ago looking for folks willing to sell younger laying hens and found 2-3 potential sellers. But bro still hasn't pulled the trigger yet. You can lead a horse to water but can't make them drink....

    C. Dream- Some folks in your grand state don't want anymore spud land to happen. Spuds are probably not their "buds".

I wonder if there would have been much squawk if it would have been half a dozen family farms converting several thousand acres to over 10k vs. a couple of corporations?? The end result is the same, less patches of pine in that part of the state. Or is it scale dependent no matter the ownership, "big" is bad and "small" is good?? Maybe some smaller farmer could have started a niche boutique potato business of selling and shipping by priority mail premium, organic, heirloom, etc. etc. spuds to urbanites who have more money than they know what to do with. In potato production to make money its either massive volumes (because the margins are so low) or its some sort of niche premium market, middle-sized guys will not survive over time...

R.D. Offutt's pines-to-potatoes plan is scaled back in compromise with Minnesota DNR - StarTribune.com
