It's all good bro. I'm in the same situation. We have a private well and septic system. It's a little freaky to think that the water is recycled but you get used to the idea. It's not really a problem as long as you keep everything in good working order and there aren't any junkyards or landfills nearby.

I don't know how it works where you are, but here sewer is the biggest part of my water bill. Not paying and switching back to well water could cause you legal problems.
I'd suggest you rethink that plan of action.
Just my .02 or 1# of light iron, which ever you prefer.

Ummmm .... i was just thinking.

It would be a good idea to give your well a shock treatment. Maybe the plumber already did it ?

When your foot valve goes they have to pull that 80 feet of plastic pipe going down the well to get to it. They almost always drag it across the lawn where it picks up e-coli, coliform, and fecal coliform bacteria. If they stuff that pipe back down the well after the repair and they don't chlorinate all that nasty will breed and make you sick.

Anyway ... standard practice these days whether it's a municipal water pipe -or- a pipe in a private well. Always do a shock treatment with a 24 hour detention time and then flush it thoroughly after it's been disinfected.

There's a dosage chart available on line that goes by well depth & casing diameter so that you know the right amount of bleach to use.

I will tell you what, friend, my well water isn't fit to wash a dog. It stinks of sulpher, has rust, and is so hard it drops out of a hose in cubes. My softening and aeration and chlorination and carbon filter actually makes it fit to drink, but the RO makes splendid water. Crystal clear ice cubes, enjoyable glasses of water straight from the dispenser, tasty coffee and iced tea. It theoretically removes everything that = non water. If you do not use an RO for your water and you are on a well, indulge yourself.

Just for the record, I know some are looking and thinking about the chlorination and asking themselves why I would do this. I need to have aeration to remove the sulpher (if I do not, the sulpher released by showers condenses on my AC and turns to sulphuric acid and will dissolve the copper coil). This is done by spraying the water pumped from the ground out of aerators that allow the sulpher to off gas. The aerated water then sits in a tank exposed to the air (with a screen to keep bugs and windblown objects out). The tank will turn into an algae choked frog pond (which many are) unless chlorine is introduced. It also sanitizes the well water in the event that any microbes that may be in the water pumped by the well. It will also oxidize any iron in the water that could cause rust stains in fixtures and showers. It is a very low concentration (about a third of a gallon diluted in about twenty gallons of water in a tank that is then injected drop by drop into 200? gallon aeration holding tank) and then filtered through a carbon filter bottle. All in all, I am very happy with the water quality as it is now.

With the setup you've got ... you're better off on your own. From what i've seen with the municipal systems it's a mixed bag. Some are pretty good and some aren't.

We've been pretty fortunate here at home. The water coming out of the well is fairly decent. The lab tests all came back without any problems. It varies by the season though. See .... here in Maine the ground freezes to a depth of four feet in the winter. Come late January there's little or no recharge from above so what you've got is what you've got down in the aquifer. As that draws down the minerals in the water get more concentrated. Sometimes we get a little bit of odor with high Manganese levels.

We shift over to drinking bottled water till after the spring thaw just to be on the safe side.

Otherwise .... it seems to work okay.
