When I first joined, I had no idea about forums, forum etiquette, expectations, or the rules. I had some farm machinery to scrap for a relative and my focus was on that, not the forum. Needless to say, my post had lots of questions and I got land blasted because a lot of the answers were in old posts. The research would have taken longer than the project. I was hurt and wanted nothing to do with this site after that experience.
As more projects came along, I did research on the site but did not interact. As new members joined I saw a pattern, most were like me with no knowledge of the forum or scrapping. They just had one project they were focused on. My demeanor for greeting new members is based on this experience. If they find value in the forum, they will become contributing members, if not maybe I helped make life easier for them.
Mechanics method of answering new members questions is the best. He posts links that answer their questions, something I have not learned. I would encourage all of us to remember, we were all newbies at one time, both to forums and scrapping. Treat new members the way you would want to be treated.
Now a question, how do I scrap a computer?
