Blast from the past 175 Can-am

Over the years I've had my share of dirt bikes, the Can-am below not mine sure brought back some good memory’s. I owned a Can-am 175 same bike I discovered yesterday in a collection at one of the local bike shops.

The Can-am made by Bombardier in Canada was a very fast bike, wished the one I found the other day could be mine, I would even trade my Honda VT 1100 to own this one, but doubt the owner would accept the trade.

Also in the collection a 650 Triumph, I once had the 500 Tiger, cammed with twin carbs. The oldest bike I owned was a 1937 Indian 500 Scout which was cool to ride with the stick shift.

I love the old dirt bikes.
My first motorcycle was a 1975 Yamaha MX-80. The next was a 76 YZ-80, a 77 YZ-125, a 76 CR 250 Husqvarna, a 85 CR 250 Husqvarna and the last one I owned was a 87 XC 430 Husqvarna. I almost had my right leg ripped off racing in Kentucky on that one.

I remember back in the early 70's all of the different dirt bikes. CZ's, Ossa's, Bultacos, Maico's, Can-Am's, just to name a few.

Those were some good times.

Took my son to a mud run when he became bored told him to pick cans and bottles, over the three day event my son made $1200.00. He wanted to buy a dirt bike so we went looking for a basket case and found a Kawasaki KDX 80 with a seized engine that would make a good father /son project.

Piston seized in the cylinder, scored the chrome plating inside the cylinder bore then to top things off a bent connecting rod,

We took the cylinder into Mongose a shop that specialises in small engines, they installed a Wiseco sleeve and supplied the piston and connecting rod from the same manufacture. When we received the reconditioned cylinder we ported and polished the ports also making adjustments to the piston to port deck height at bottom dead centre. before putting the engine back together.

My son now had a bike with good performance that could almost keep up to my Can-am we spent many a weekend checking out the various trails and logging roads.
