you ALWAYS take the lump sum....you might not LIVE the 30 years for the payout. Additionally, even at the lower rate, invested, that money will end up far more valuable than if you took the payments. The rule of 7 (doubling every 7 years), would have your money doubling 4.2 TIMES by the end of 30 years. Even taking some out, you will have FAR FAR more money than the payments would give you.

depends on your state...using the highest rates (New York) you would be taxed at 40% (all taxes included)...the lump sum value is somewhere close to $496M,,,,so you would end up around $300m....again your state might be a fair amount less (is upside of +$25M max).

Still like I said above...that amount invested at a moderate risk will yield FAR FAR more than the original $800m (EVEN WITHOUT TAKING OUT TAXES). We will assume it doubles only 3 times in 30 years...that is pretty conservative. You would end up with $300M *2*2*2 = $2.4 BILLION. If you managed to live the 30 years and get it all...your invested amount would be a far amount less...I don't have the numbers for that complex calculation, but from what I remember when I had to do them in finance class, probably 1/2 that. Obviously the numbers will be somewhat different because you would take money out to lve and buy all the stuff you every wanted, but still and extraordinary amount more if lump sum.
