What's the difference between "Scandinavian" and "Nordic"??

Sometimes you need a break at work. It started off that I couldn't remember what the flag of Denmark looks like because there's a guy at work who has a Norwegian flag in his office and when I do my outer hall walks, I see it. And that reminded me once again that I couldn't remember what the Danish flag looked like. So, I got that solved this late afternoon but then I pondered, "is Finland part of Scandinavia?" because they're kind of cousins with Norwegians, Swedes, and Danes but the language is from a different branch of the Indo-European family. So what's the answer? That lead to "what's the difference between 'Scandinavian' and 'Nordic'"? So, I found this neat little web site and found out. I also found out what the flag of Iceland looks like. More factoids stuffed into the brain maybe to be used again someday. Then again maybe not...

All the "Nordic" countries flags have a cross on its side but in different colors and on different background colors. The Norwegian flag is very popular here because of all the Norskis and the Swedish flag a little less so. But the Danish flag kept slipping my mind and I was surprised when it was white on red, had totally forgotten that. The Finnish flag is also pretty easy to remember. Now I know the Icelandic flag so all the Nordic countries are covered.

It's kinda like the difference between North Dakota and South Dakota. The folks in Iceland raise sheep & goats and are pretty domestic. The Norse with their Viking heritage are bold adventurous thrill seekers. Of all things ... they're into live trapping wildcats. ( It's a catch & release thing.) There was an article written on the whole phenomena by Claude Testis awhile back.

Here's a good Nova documentary on the Vikings. Unfortunately, I fell asleep half way through it. I woke up at one in the morning all crippled up in my computer chair.

Something like that but it's a whole nuther ballgame.

The Norwegian Forest cat is something like our Maine Coon cat. They get to be about 25 - 30 lbs when they're fully grown. The domestic ones are pretty social and easygoing while the feral kind that live out in the woods are known to prey on octopus & sea cucumbers

Must be a cultural thing because the Norse feel there's no sport in mounting and stuffing a dead animal.( Ewww ... Gross ! )

Instead ... they prefer to trap them live. It's more of a challenge that way.

From what i've heard there's a whole science to it. They wait until mating season and the females are in heat. They can tell when it's time from all the screams bouncing off the walls of the fijords. They set these long narrow traps down on the beach and bait them with male domestic cat urine. The cat goes in head first to investigate the scent and once she's fully in the door slams down on her butt.

Sometimes they set up a game camera to capture the event and get it all on time lapse video. ( Some things are just priceless !) At first she's just a bit bewildered and the expression on her face is " Ohh ... My ... Gawd. What kind of a mess did i get myself into ?"

After an hour or two she turns into a screaming, hissing, ball of fury. It's like: LET ME OUT OF THIS CAGE ! I'm gonna rip someone a new ass**** for this one!

They usually pour a bucket of cold seawater over her head to calm her down when they get like this. It's a lot easier to manage them when they're wet but not quite so wild. After she's settled the pop open the door and grab her by the hind legs. If it's done right it keeps her in place. If she's wise to the game they literally have a little tiger by the tail and from there on in it's all teeth & claws.

Old Claude Testis must have really earned his stripes to have written such a knowledgeable article on the subject.
