If your HP printer suddenly started having an error msg w/ your aftermarket cartridge

Thought I would pass this along as it happened to me last week. HP either did a firmware update to many of its printers OR (like in my case, as I had ALL updates blocked from them) that allegedly have a KILL DATE preprogrammed into their printers to ban aftermarket cartridges. It happened and I called support, voice my opinion in the HP support forum etc. No one will own up UNTIL I found this article today. Read it and judge for yourself.

Needless to say I will NEVER have another HP printer in my house...I could only imagine this is illegal somehow and certainly in some other countries I am betting. Hopefully, enough people will fuss and an investigation happens...I hope it get very uncomfortable and EXPENSIVE for them (similar to the Sony rootkit issue a few years ago).

Here is a link to the article...I cannot verify the validity of the article, just what I read...

Yea I paid $5500.00 for a brand new wide format photo quality printer with another $1500.00 for the RIP software, the HP built in software monitors the ink cartridges for date of manufacture and expiry date also the printer if used or not wouild go through a cleaning process using up ink spitting it into a resovour.

A full OEM ink cartridge replacment cost $1200.00, aftermarket cartridges are chipped, you find plenty of outdated ink cartridges New Old Stock being sold at bargain prices, they'll work fine but give an error code which you have to ignore.

Bummer that my new printer was under warrenty and did not want to voild this by using refilled or aftermarket ink.

I share your views on the HP printer, they suck big time and I'll never purchase another.

Another disapointment the Ink has a 200 year archival rating, one picture I printed off and sold last year has fadded and this picture was placed behind musseum glass which has some protection from UV.

    Chip resetters for HP printers

All HP ink cartridges and ink tanks come fitted with IC chips these days. The cartridge chips store ink level information as well as expiration date of the cartridge and other data.

yep that is correct...luckily I used a reseller on Amazon and they are sending me ones with the new chip (after I verified I had ones with the old chips). EITHER WAY, if they updated my firmware without my consent (I turned ALL updating off from them on DAY 1) OR they have a built in kill date, they are getting sued...guaranteed. You CANNOT do that sort of stuff...these companies have done similar thing in the past and loss their A%% in court.

Hopefully this is a VERY VERY VERY expensive lesson for them in terms of at least lost business....

On my HP large format I have to first download the firmware upgrade.

Wow...sorry to hear that about downloading...I am not downloading a DA%^ thing from those A$$hats. They get NOTHING from me...ever again. I only bought it because a peer recommended it as I was cautious before. Lesson learned.

QUICK NOTE: looks like the BBC picked this up and is reporting it...let's see how long 'til this goes worldwide on the news. ::grabs popcorn:: EVIL GRIN

I once bought a brand new HP $1000 Color Laser that crapped out before the toner even was through its first set of cartridges.

About 2 years ago I got a beaut Okidata 5500 Color Laser on an e-waste pickup.
I used it until the drum failed and the cartridges were all but spent. Replacement costs were outrageous!
    So I scrapped it.

I just put into service one from a load I pick up. I recently scored (2) Used LaserJet 1320's with OEM cartridges in them.
I will use the one until the cartridge is done, and swap in the next. If the printer fails, I'll put the second one into service.

They are just throw-aways at this point. I print until they die, and scrap them when they are done.
But I won't waste my $ fixing a printer anymore or buying new ever again!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!
