Thieves Helped Crack Bombing Case

Several bombs planted in both Manhattan and New Jersey—among them one that detonated Saturday night, injuring dozens—were inadvertently disabled by thieves.

A pressure cooker bomb was left in a rolling suitcase on West 27th Street in New York City, and according to DNAinfo, well-dressed men allegedly took the bomb out of the bag and then placed it in a garbage bag before stealing the suitcase. By removing it, officials say the unidentified thief accidentially disabled the device.

Once disabled, authorities could look at the cellphone attached to the explosive and eventually trace it back to New Jersey resident Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, who is wanted for questioning in more than one explosion over the weekend.

Who in this world finds a pressure cooker with a phone and just takes the bag?” a law-enforcement source asked on Monday. Earlier Monday morning, in New Jersey, another set of thieves took a backpack on a trash can that had five bombs, which has also been tied to Rahami.



The would-be thieves dropped the bag and called 911, likely preventing it from detonating in a crowded train station later in the day. The bag detonated while police were handling it, but no injuries were reported.

I found some aluminium wrapped in tape in the middle of the road once.
Someone had driven over it too.

Once I got it home, unwrapped it to find a Ali tube full of different gunpowders/green pellet/cordite stick, surrounded with BBshot.
Whoever had made it had put diesel in there, as well a a 'pressure ignition ignighter'.
The diesel fuel had made everything wet and probably stopped it from infighting. Saving at least one persons life....

Given enough cars driving over it, it would have exploded though, glad I found it first. About the same power as 1/2 stick dynamite..

That was the day I added "Bomb disposal expurt" as another 'Thread to my bow'.

In hindsight, I should have had a better look at it first, called the experts and got all of the glory to go with it....

Kid! Dude! Man! Bro! Cuz! Pal! Buddy!... Don't do that! How far did you get before you knew you were dealing with an unexploded bomb? What went through you mind!?... Oh, I think I have an unexploded bomb on the bench in front of me. I better be careful where I grind and drill it and hit it with the hammer from here on out....

Definitely a "hold my beer and watch this $hit" moment if I ever heard of one.
