Or have realtives tell you about it if your parents names show up in the state listings! That happened to my brother and me, some of our cousins saw my dad's name show up in the unclaimed property list 5+ years after he passed. It appears that his life insurance company must have bought some stocks in the same with a policy or two he had. The pay out side must not have communicated with the other side of the company that he had died. Either that or they run a scam to keep the money value of the stocks for 5 years to make more interest and then turn it over to the state as unclaimed property. We never saw any documentation that dad owned any stock in this company.
Anyway, we found out about in April I think and didn't go forward in claiming it for a few months--can't remember the reason why. Good for su because during that time the stock had split and gained about twice as much in value. I worked with a very nice lady with the South Dakota Unclaimed Property Office and every thing went smooth when we actually filed.
Funny, most of my share went to pay for my wife's vacation to s. FL during the following winter with her mom and sister. Interesting how things work out that way
