    Quit Smoking Cold Turky

    Had no plans on quiting just cutting down a bit, my body reacted by going into uncontrollable coughing fits, shortness of breath that resulted in anxiety attacks. I'm not one for Dr's and hospitals, spent the afternoon on oxygen, felt great.



    Forty five years smoking unfiltered cigarettes the x-ray technician says I have the lungs of an athlete. Doctor prescribed three different types of huff medications that actually worked.

    My lungs no longer being assaulted with cigarette smoke were trying to cleans themselves from the crude, why we humans disregard the body's will to survive is beyond me.

    You need determination and motivation to quit not luck, the anxiety attacks gave me all the motivation I needed.

    I quit many years ago and found a similar reaction. It was my 4 or 5th attempt within about 25 years of smoking 3-4 packs a day.

    The physical cleaning of my lungs was shocking and something I will not go into.

    Years after quitting cigarettes I would occasionally have a craving for a cigarette but thankfully did not act it. I am now very sensitive to all types of smoke and engine exhaust.

    Its never too late or too early to quit. The more times you quit the better you get at quitting. Seriously you learn when you fail just like other things in life.

    One other thing I noticed a while after quitting was the inside of my truck stunk of cigarette smoke.

    Congrats on quitting smoking and you will find your health is better, less colds. 73, Mike

    I can relate to the stink, the outside smoking area at the hospital is really offensive.

    After being on the oxygen for awhile I jokingly said to the nurse the only thing my sex life is missing - oxygen.

    The horrible thing about using tobacco that it slowly steals the life out of you.

    In order to avoid physiological triggers that would have me craving a cigarette I have replaced coffee with bottled water.

    That's the kind of stuff I also did as a result of quitting and failing several times. You learn from failure perhaps more than from success.

    Thank you for sharing some of the things that worked for you. One thing I did before quiting I would not empty my ashtray. For about a week before I quit I would put my nose right up close to that ashtray and smell it. Of course it was revolting but it got me in the mind set 73, Mike

    Congrats to you Alloy2 and Miked as well.

    I don't mean to steal your thunder or hijack your thread Alloy, but I also quit my tobacco about 3 weeks ago. Been chewing Copenhagen about 1 tin a week for 20 years.

    My father in law brought me a magazine that had an article about a rancher in Montana who got mouth cancer. Well this rancher decided to create his own chew that was all tobacco-less and herbal and whatnot. It's called Holt Chew.

    So I ordered a can and it was not too bad. Finished that can, and my last (hopefully) can of Copenhagen. Ordered 5 more cans of Holt chew, and I'm liking it.

    Ingredients are; Alfalfa, water, honey, peppermint, cayenne pepper (to give it that burn) and ascorbic acid (preservative).

    Holt Tobaccoless Chew | World's Greatest Chew | Whitehall, Montana if anybody wants to give it a try.

    I have noticed that I sleep MUCH better since quiting the Cope. I used to rumble for hour, hour and a half. Now head hits pillow and I'm out in 10-15 min. I've noticed some other positive changes that if I spelled out here would be too much information. Haha.

    Are you missing the tobacco or the coffee more? Quitting both at the same time seems extreme to me.

    Definitely the tobacco, now that my lungs are on the mend, I'm finding that the nicotine is not a physical dependency but a physiological one and I suppose this is what makes hypnotism as a good aid to those who wish to quit the habit so successful.

    I usually drink two to three pots of coffee from the time a wake up in the morning, giving it up has not been a hardship. Caffeine withdrawal you get a slight headache and thats it, no reoccurring problems.

    Caffeine is a stimulant to the central nervous system, and regular use of caffeine does cause mild physical dependence. ... If you stop taking caffeine abruptly, you may have symptoms for a day or more, especially if you consume two or more cups of coffee a day. Symptoms of withdrawal from caffeine include: headache.

    Been ten years for me. me. The hard part is that you never stop wanting a cigarette. That is what no one ever tell s you. The wife has quit for a while and went back for a bit. More than once I took a drag just for ****s and giggles. Good luck.

    Best of luck to all who decide to quit. I'm now 13 months smoke free after smoking 40 years and it is amazing how I always have an extra $50 in my wallet now.
    If it wasn't for the $ in $crap, it would just be.....

    Congrats Rusty. I know what you mean. Any time I want something a little ... Ahhhh... not really the right word, but, extravagant, I just say to myself, "well, that is just three packs of cigarettes I didn't buy."

    I have been 13 years or so , I gained a lot of weight , now it is time to trim the fat so to speak lol, I too cannot stand smoke plus it killed my first wife , COPD and is killing my youngest son but he is like his mother stubborn !!
