The mining can run in the background, and not affect your computer's performance that much. Currently, I would say that you should be using about 1TB of space for the mining, but you can use as much as you want and still get coins...just maybe more slowly.
Does this mean I could use some old scrap computer as long as it was plugged into a really big hard drive?
I'm curious, but it seems like it would be a hell of a learning curve and probably not something I should venture into right now.
