To those in the path of Irma...

That time of the year my friends.

Hurricane season is upon us. An Mother Nature is showing, despite the ability to be beautiful, she is also capable of being quiet violent and deadly. Irma is baring down on Florida and the south east. Harvey walloped Texas. Which...allow me to divert for a moment and say, to any of our members in Texas, Houston, etc, or with family/friends/etc there..I hope you are well an your loved ones are also, an you came through safe and whole. Stay strong..cliche...but a good saying for such an event.

Back to my post..

As I was saying above, it's that time of the year again. Hurricane season. An it's starting rather rough. Mother Nature is bringing her A game this year. My point? Heed the safety warnings, stay up to date on the storm if your in it's path, or predicated path. An for the love of god, if your told to leave...do so my friends. You can rebuild, you can replace THINGS. You can't replace yourself or your loved ones, or your pets, or anything else you love an hold dear. I don't say this as someone who doesn't know what life is like in a hurricane zone. Been there done that, an I assure you, if a storm came my way anywhere near the power of these last two, I'd be half way to Arizona in a heart beat an hanging out with Hobo til it passed.

If your not keeping up with the storm here's where we stand...



Florida appears so far to be it's target. As of last I checked(couple minutes before this post) it was up to 185mph sustained winds(1 minute) and gusts of up to 200mph. It's a category 5. The highest rating for a hurricane. I'll save you the copy/paste of what such a storm can do. Plenty of news, weather and private sites will be happy to share that info with you. To put this in perspective...the strongest storm recorded is Hurricane/Tropical Cyclone Patricia with sustained speeds of 215 mph.


TL: DR - Stay safe, don't be stupid. Flee if need be. You can rebuild, you can't replace life, or loved ones. Yes, leave the cooler if need be...I'll be sad, but I'd rather your alive.


If your in the path, be safe an be sure to let us know you made it through. Sending positive thoughts, an the like ahead of time, I anticipate the lines being busy in the future.

My wife has family in Puerto Rico. Keeping our fingers crossed. They are getting hit hard right know.

I would also turn off the water supply to the dishwasher, I have heard you should fill up your tub with water and put ice in your washer to use as a makeshift cooler if you are trying to ride out the storm at home.

24 hours to go! Sorry for putting up another Hurricane Irma post, Sirscrapalot. I missed yours before posting mine. I cleaned up around the garage/lot and took in a load yesterday morning. (Don't want metal missiles)
The yard owner actually warned me that prices here would drop after the storm because the scrap supply would be huge. We expect hundreds, and possibly thousands, of lanais, pool enclosures, and car ports to be destroyed.
Months later, as insurance companies deliver checks, prices may rise as demand/rebuilding occurs.
By the way, the eye of the storm is projected to go right over my little town of Citrus Springs. Ugh!

Thank you for your concern Sirscrapalot. I just read your post as I was in the peanut field going hard until the rain hit. We're on the FL line, middle of Alabama so it didn't hit us head on. We did get a few inches of rain and around 50 mph winds here which blew out some of the cotton crop but not too bad. Others have it far worse and I pray they can get everything back together.

@Pnut Glad to hear you made it through with minimum damage. An you are correct, lots of folks got the ever loving snot knocked out of them an lost everything. Hopefully are Fl. members/friends made it through safe an whole. Sure they'll check in when their able.

Good tips! I also recommend a washer or dryer for storage. Cat 4 or 5...might not help much but the Cat 3 an lower i would think your valuables would be safe. Make you unhook the water line tho if using the washer, an unplug both. I tend to put things in mine when a good storm is coming through. Wife takes the super important stuff with her to the hotel an tosses into a safe. Smart gal she is. If I were to evacuate my sandbar I'm only taking what I have to...Wife, Pets, certain valuables. Everything else can be replaced.

An sorry for the delay. They've been doing work on the cable/internet lines down here, so have been without for a couple days while they did my little part.

Finally heard from them wednesday. Everyone is OK. Now TS Maria has Puerto Rico in her sights and is projected to be a Cat 3 hurricane on wednesday when she hits them.

Still no power or running water at my house in Volusia County. so I went to work.
