Next time plan better! Have a Ice Cream Truck selling Bottled water, Beer, Gas, Propane Tanks and Generators drive up and down the street and collect scrap metal as space allows! LOL

Topic 756 - Employment Taxes for Household Employees

Household employees include housekeepers, maids, babysitters, gardeners, and others who work in or around your private residence as your employee. Repairmen, plumbers, contractors, and other business people who provide their services as independent contractors, are not your employees.

Household workers are your employees if you can control not only the work they do but also how they do it.

Social Security and Medicare Taxes (Federal Insurance Contributions Act – FICA)

If you pay cash wages of $2,000 or more for 2017 (this threshold can change from year to year) to any one household employee, you generally must withhold 6.2% of social security and 1.45% of Medicare taxes (for a total of 7.65%) from all cash wages you pay to that employee.

You also must pay your share of social security and Medicare taxes, which is also 7.65% of cash wages. (Cash wages include wages you pay by check, money order, etc.) Unless you prefer to pay your employee's share of social security and Medicare taxes from your own funds, you should withhold 7.65% from each payment of cash wages you make.


You can find the specified dollar amounts and percentages under the topic "Do You Need To Pay Employment Taxes?" in Publication 926 (PDF), Household Employer's Tax Guide.

Pay the amount you withhold to the IRS with an additional 7.65% for your share of the taxes. If you pay your employee's share of social security and Medicare taxes from your own funds, the amounts you pay for your employee count as wages for purposes of the employees' income tax.

However, don't count them as social security and Medicare wages or as wages for federal unemployment tax.

The tax issue was raised regarding sales tax that would not be collected by the state. The state of Florida does not require the providers of services to collect and submit sales tax.

I did not get mad at the responses. I was surprised that people replied in a manner that seemed to suggest they were mad at me.

Right now the awesome, garage sale, old style gas containers are pouring gas into the awesome, garage sale generators I have bought. I reeeeelly wanted to use the 3K generator to keep the fridge and AC on the back porch going, but the neighbor who asked if we wanted some of the plywood sheets set aside at his work to cover our porch, asked if they could use the generator to charge their phones. They said they were worried about the food in their fridges, so I gave them the 3K gen to use. It was hard to give it up, but I imagine it wasn't easy for them to part with 6 sheets of ply either.

In a note that has been circulating online, a Florida location of the pizza chain issued strict rules for employees scheduling work as the state prepared for Hurricane Irma.

"If evacuating, you will have a 24-hour period before storm 'grace period' to not be scheduled," the note reads. "You cannot evacuate Friday for a Tuesday storm event! Failure to show for these shifts, regardless of reason, will be considered a no call/no show and documentation will be issued."

The storm is not expected to arrive in Jacksonville, where this particular Pizza Hut is located, until Tuesday.

The note also says that, in the event of an evacuation, workers "MUST" return within 72 hours.

Da Babe just called and FPL says it should be on by the 22nd.... I didn't ask, but I am hoping they meant September.

I bought a 10K generator a while ago to resell. I paid $175 and spent $325 to have it repaired. Sold it for $1,000. Looks good, but the best part is that huge thing is out of my shed.... And now someone without power now has power.
