How to distinguish lead from tin wheel weights using a magnet,
Put a wheel weight onto a piece of foam large enough to hold the weight afloat in a pail of water bring a strong magnet close to the weight if it's repelled by the magnet the item is diamagnetic you have lead, if the weight on your foam float is drawn to the magnet then you have tin.
Tin is paramagnetic.
Magnesium is paramagnetic while aluminum is diamagnetic, to identify each metal hang you strong scrap magnet on a string then use it as a pendulum as the magnet passes over magnesium the pendulum slows much quicker than had he metal been aluminum. The magnet has to be in close proximity to the metal being identified.
