Yes...Katrina was nasty. I went to AZ that year(Drove) and saw the folks coming out of that area. Helped a couple out even.

Thankfully unlike New Orleans, we don't sit as low as them, and don't have to worry about dams, reservoirs, 50 bajillion people, etc. Katrina was mess on all levels, from evacuation, to shelters, to well just everything. A lot of places learned from that, which is why you see so many places prepping well ahead of time now. We've had an evacuation order in effect since this morning I think. We've known it was coming since Sunday night though.

I can't speak for other places but here on my sandbar, they do a good job of telling you what the costs of staying are. Those of us who stay aren't just doing it for fun, etc. We have a reason for being here. Not all of us..cause there is always that one weirdo but most of us. lol. Tourists in the beach house next to the hotel took off this morning. They had to, bridges will be closed tonight at 5 or 7 I forget which. No way on or off at that point. Your riding it out. Heh. I think a lot of problems with Katrina and Sandy were..nobody listened. The officials didn't act fast enough an the populations didn't take it seriously.

I can't stress it enough..hurricanes don't play. They will trick you into thinking "oh it's just a rain storm" an then boom some one mourning you, or your trying to rebuild everything you lost.

Enough preaching from me. Send thoughts an prayers for the folks inland to. Like Texas last year they will have it even worse thanks to the flooding that is going to rain down on the mainland areas. A lot of them are low lying, an those folks will need all the help they can get. Oh an the "rain down" wasn't intended to be a pun but hey I'll take it.

This will the most powerful to hit the Carolina's in 30 years I think they are saying. It's not all about wind. The rain and storm surge are nasty business to. A combo of all 3 is not a pretty thing. There will be lots of rebuilding going on up an down the coast.

On the bright side...I got biscuits an gravy for breakfast, an a ton of a bacon. An the breakfast lady gave me a bunch of bacon for the room! My sandwiches just got better. Bacon makes everything better. EVERYTHING. I informed her she just got on my Christmas Card list.

One must find the silver lining in all things. So take that mother nature. I GOT BACON!

    Photos

Taken earlier today, around 930/10 am. Ocean is waking up. Low tide is around 4/430 today. If not raining I'll be taking more photos then. I'm no professional photographer, so the shots all come from my phone.

Sorry for the large size. Had to attach them as I don't feel like looking for a photo hosting site right this second. Someone else wants to...awesome.

More to come as the day(s) go on. This is the before, enjoy it. I know I will once I'm done with this post. Toes in the water, ass in the sand time.

Yes there is a hurricane coming. It ain't here yet though.

Sirscrapalot - Why did the broom get fired from it's job? It over-swept.

If you promise to bail me out of jail. The police have it let be known if your caught "swimming" you will be arrested. Heh.

Judging the waves from my room I'm not missing much. Some folks were out yesterday surfing an the like. Waves were a bit bigger. Right now they aren't doing a thing as low tide is coming in a hour or so. Wouldn't know there was a storm coming looking outside.

News reporter's camera guy was out catching waves yesterday. Was kinda funny. Hope he works a camera better then he surfs.

WOW.. I'm a bit shocked you are going to try and ride this one. Path I saw last night looked like it might turn the "Outer Banks" into "The Empty Banks" on a direct hit.

Not about brave. Can't leave the wife. lol.

Sadly being a manager of hotel with media an power crews staying you can't just close up an roll out.

An I know the forecasts, btu they keep changing it, very often it seems. Earlier it was going to ga, now it's stalling in nc, etc etc. We're taking a

Plan for the worse, hope for the best scenario. Can't do much more then that. Otherwise you just stress yourself out and turn an already stressful situation into a even worse situation. On the outside I'm all..hey cool..a storm. On the inside I'm packed an already sitting in Arizona with Hobo talking goats an drinking beers.

Tincan ya be safe yourself buddy. Lots of water coming your way also.

An don't worry folks, be happy.

Believe it or not the state of AZ goes through natural disaster drills. The only thing is that what they drill is what to do when California has a natural disaster and they all come running... which granted would be a disaster for AZ.

I remember a funny story from there. Last time I was out there for a spell, hurricane/tropical storm was going to hit Mexico. They had mentioned on the news about flash flooding, and higher then normal winds, as we'd feel a tiny part of the storm in Tucson. No warnings, watches, or anything. Later that night I get a frantic knock on my door. One of the neighbors needed to tell me I should head to higher ground as a hurricane was coming, and people needed to be warned. I believe I looked at him, laughed, an went back to sleep.

I don't think I'll ever worry about a hurricane hitting Tucson. The big thing of mountains surrounding it for one, an the lack of you know..water to fuel it for 2. I still get a laugh when I think of that guy. Bless his little heart.

An AZ gets....fires, an other weird weather. I'll keep the hurricanes over wildfires any day. Wildfires suck more then a hurricane does.

Watch out for hurricanes, Arizona. The storm surge will be deadly.

    Oh, hey look..pictures.

Stay safe, Sir. Most times, the storm is bad, but the days after are harder. I hope you have a gen ready to roll. It is also an important bit of info... An 800watt power inverter is sufficient to run a modern fridge. Hook to your car with some decent heavy cables and run the extension cord to the fridge. Make sure to run the car while you bring your fridge back to temp. You will also be able to recharge your phone and laptop(s) and run a fan. I don't know how warm it is there, but my 3K little compresser was able to run the fridge, lights and fan, AND a 5k BTU window AC. Let us know how it goes and if there is any help we can do or send.

23:07, lights have been flickering and on and off with the internet via cable but it will get worse.

Just had a blast of wind and it shook the house a little. The eye of the storm expected to hit in the morning between where I am and 40 miles down the coast.

Still got hot coffee so I'm ok. Will report in the morning if able. 73, Mike

ps Just saw a report of 75 kt. gusts here in town, Jacksonville, NC

Onslow county, where I live, decided not to open any shelters because their shelters are not rated for a Cat 4 hurricane. Hopefully all those rich folks living in trailers had the time to jump in their private planes and escape the hurricane. I'm not impressed with the local political leadership. M

I hope you guys are doing okay. When Irma went through here last year, we were in and out in 24 hours. It was scary, but not for very long. I can't imagine days of my hours. I know they have sent FPL crews up there to help y'all get your power back and your streets clear. I think it may have been a NC crew that got us back up and running after a week with no elec. A cold 18pk of Natty light wrapped in paper bags accidentally fell into one of their trucks as thanks. I hope you will be amazed by the help you get and the way everyone will pull together to help out.

It seems like there's a lot of solar energy stored up in the atmosphere that's gonna have to find a way of blowing itself off. It usually does that with wind and storms in the fall.

The last time i saw conditions like this was the year when hurricane Kat hit NOLA. I wasn't there, but it looked like entire communities were leveled to the ground from the news footage. Nothing was left standing in the hardest hit areas ? People disappeared and never seen or heard from again ?

My son and his family bugged out of Myrtle Beach yesterday and headed South to Georgia so i know they will be okay, but I'm concerned about everyone else that may end up in the cross hairs of this storm.

I love Dire Straits and that song. I had never (that I remember) seeing the video.
