You have the family over for a cookout. You eject your brother-in-law because he's too dense to wrap his mind around the concept that his empties go in the recycling bin, NOT the trash bag...
(Didn't actually happen today, but I had to debate on whether to reach in and retrieve them from amongst all the half eaten burgers and potato salad. Decided to wait til everybody had gone home.)
You might be a scrapper if, when you are running late getting your kids to school you still make them get out of the car at every stop sign to pick up a can.
you use superglue for bandaids
you sit at your desk at school wondering what youd get for scrap at the yard down the street....
I was thinking about the same thing. A 3 wheel bike and modify the basket area to hold a trash can.
Wonder how many cans it's gonna take to pay for this bike.
Or I might get a regular bike and a kid trailer and modify that.
OH....I like this idea. I haven't had any luck finding a 3 wheel bike close to me. It would be great if we could build a light weight crusher to go on the kid trailer --- then carry more cans per load.
That it what I do, ride my bike, get exercise and get cans. When I ride I will wear my green trousers with a large cargo pocket on each leg. I will stuff these with crushed cans until they are full, then empty them into plastic bags I have brought along. These bags will get hung on the handlebars (and flipped over the handle bars once so they do not swing too much) and I start filling the pockets again. I have also cut the top off of the largest plastic bottle I could find that would fit in the water bottle holder. Into this bottle goes other small scrap I see (wheel weights, brass fittings, lug nuts, etc). I usually have a pretty good load when I get back home, and then I proceed to separate it all out, and feel better for the exercise I got.
My fingers and hands are valuable commodities and while stepping on a can while wearing boots is okay, I suspect I will be wearing tenni shoes while pedaling. I found a Trike (3 wheel bike) today that has a basket on the back. That's what I'm talking about......pedal up to can and pick it up without getting off by using the long grabber.
I'm going to have to build a can crusher hooked up to the pedals\wheels.
I have a container on my truck just for screws and bolts My motto is "Every little Bit HELPS"
So I went and tested this kind of bike today.
It will NOT work. Well, first of all, the bike was too tall. But besides that.....trying to swing the leg OVER the top of the basket.....well, that's not going to work!!!

I'm still thinking a three wheeled bike like the following is the best solution:
Now try to imagine some type of "can crushing" gizmo added to this bike. I'm wondering how much power it would take to crush a can. Actually, IdahoScrapper, you might be onto something. Let's say that we carry a few large capacitors on the bike and as you pedal, you generate "charging" voltage\current that is stored in the large capacitors. Then when it reaches a certain stored energy level, it triggers the release thru a crushing motion.
Better yet rig up and crusher that would work off the chain.
And then add something that hikes the can up into the basket
